Anyone been to ST. KITTS?

My wife and I are planning a trip to St. Kitts in January. We are considering the Horizons Villa Resorts. I would appreciate any info on St. Kitts and Horizons. Thanks!

Dear Bob: My husband and I just returned Sunday from St. Kitts. It was our first trip to that particular island. We are divers and we picked St. Kitts so that we could also include a rainforest tour during our vacation. The island is the most beautiful one we have been to so far (we have also been to Grand Cayman and Provo in Turks and Caicos) The island is made up of beautiful rolling hills and valleys that reach up into the clouds. It is very lush. There are monkeys that roam the island, yes one went running across the road on day as we were driving to Turtle Beach. There are lizards and crabs all over the place not to mention the goats and chickens and roosters that seem to own the island. They are everywhere. There really are no beaches around the island except for a few that you have to drive to. We stayed at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel right on the water but they had a very small beach and the sand is grey to black because the island is volcanic. The Atlantic side of the island has more Caribbean like water than the Caribbean side but the waves are more intense. We dove everyday and the water is 82 degrees. Beautiful. The visibility is somewhat cloudy due to the ash from Montserrat volcano making the water rich in nutrients. Do not miss taking a tour of the rainforest with Greggs Safari. It is excellent and he is very good at what he does.
Brimstone Hill Fortress is also very beautiful and interesting. Feel free to e-mail any other questions.

My husband and I visited St.Kitts a year ago and stayed at the Sund 'n Sand resort near Jack Tar. We fould the island very beautiful and largely unspoiled. The people are friendly and helpful. Lots of choices of places to eat if you have a vehicle. We rented a car for three days and had no trouble touring the island. A visit to neighouring Nevis is well worthwhile as well.

I would highly recommend St. Kitts. We were there in 1995 and are planning another trip for March. The island is very diverse with the rain forest in the north and the more desert like terrain of the south side. We took the Spirit of St. Kitts catamaran trip to Nevis , are only regret was taking it on the next to last day of our vacation. If we had known how much it was we would have done it twice in the same week.

As fair warning the Deep Sea Port in Basseterre will be finished (is finished?) by the end of 1997 which will result in making it a more popular cruise ship port.

Stayed in St. Kitts Dec. 95. We stayed at the Golden Lemon. Although we felt it was overrated some of the suites are quite nice and offer spectular views. Next time we would prefer to stay at Ottley's. It is not on the water, however, it offers spectular views, exquisite poolside dining, first class service and the rooms are beautiful. The island itself is quite lush and the rain forest tours are worthwhile as is the trip to Brimstone Hill. We then went to Nevis which we preferred because it is smaller and much quieter. Feel free to e-mail for more info.

I have been to St. Kitts off of the Windjammer Polynesia. Two other passengers and I rented a driver and were taken to Brimstone Hill. If you are at all interested in history the fort is great to tour. Inside you will see a film of how it was built. Many of the rooms have been restored. There are many displays of uniforms of the day, weapons, letters sent and everything that was involved in every day life. The fort was home to many soldiers and their families. Also be sure to go to Carib Batik. You will see the by hand process of making and dieing batik fabric. From the drawing with wax on fabric, to the many die processes you will see a piece of plain fabric come to life with color and design. There is a shop where you can purchase clothes, wall hangings and many other items made with the fabric. The people are warm and friendly. Enjoy
