Planning a trip for next Feb. Been to USVIs and BVIs. St. John in particular is our favorite spot. Good balance b/t secluded, pristine, white-sand beaches and fun, low-key (not TOO touristy) nightlife. Thinking of Antigua. Anyone have thoughts on Antigua or other places with characteristics similar to the ones above? All responses appreciated. Thanks.

How does Antigua compare to Anguilla?

For something similar to the BVI's, look into St. Vincent and the grenadines or ST. Barths. Small, laid back islands with a lot of natural beauty. I think Antigua is much more touristy than you may like, it is a big island compared with the others.

We really liked Antigua. We also didn't want any place that was extremely ouristy, but we did want to go somewhere that wasn't a US territory. My husband loved the history of Antigua and we both loved the friendly people we met. <BR> <BR>The beaches are indeed gorgeous! I did not find Antigua to compare too favorably to the BVI, having visited both. Antigua has some lovely beaches, but the interior is rather disappointing, and we found the island residents to be reserved to the point of impenetrable (we are polite and friendly, and like to get a response to our attempts at conversation other than an impassive stare). Getting around by rented car was a challenge -- frequent accidents snarled traffic. <BR> <BR>You may want to consider Grenada as an alternative. Still off the beaten-to-death tourist path, but possessed of stunning natural beauty and a very friendly population (even though we -- the US -- "invaded" them; in fact, many are GRATEFUL for that, and express their gratitude openly). Most accomodations are low-key and casual, and the biggest expense you will incur is getting there. I'm taking my third trip to Grenada in December, so let me know if you would like more information.
