Without knowing your budget it is difficult to make recommendations.

All inclusives a tend to appeal to the younger partying crowd and are often not noted for having "good food".

There are a few high end resorts that offer meal plans and are better suited to the older travelers. The good part is you are traveling in July when room rates are at their lowest so thes places might fit your needs. Look at Caneel Bay on St. John, Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda, Cap Juluca or Cuisinart on Anguilla, Galley Bay on Antigua or Peter Island Resort on Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands.

I so disagree with that. DH is in his late 50's and myself mid 40's and we love AI resorts. Have been to over 16 and will continue. They are all so NOT geared to younger partying crowds, and we have found "good food" at some, but not all.

As a matter of fact, we just returned from Cabo San Lucas and stayed at the Marina Fiesta AI. The atmosphere was more our age and the food was wonderful. The best we've had on any AI vacation. Our second choice would be the Royal Playa del Carmen in Playa del Carmen and then the Jewell Dunn's River in Ocho Rios.

Most higher end/adult only/couple only resorts will contain a more mature crowd, as young partiers can't really afford to stay at such places. They also tend to have the better food. The exception is Sandals. We found thier food to not be up to par and their prices ridiculous for what they offer. Resorts such as the Iberostars, Secrets, Excellance, and El Dorados are a good place to start looking.

The only AI I've ever been to is LIVE AQUA in Cancun, which Travel and Leisure just listed as no. 1 in Mexico. The rooms- especially the Aqua Suite- are gorgeous, the hotel has seven pools, an excellent health club/spa, and a wide uncrowded section of beach. If you reserve one of the suites, you get your own cabana on the beach, plus a complimentary foot massage.

We thought the food was pretty good to excellent at the restaurants on site. And a few nights, we ventured outside the resort to a wonderful Argentinian steakhouse just down the street. There's also an upscale mall just across the road and if you need nightlife ( not too much at the resort) it's easy to get in and out of downtown Cancun.
