Anguilla - ferry, cab, airport, car logistics

We're going to go to Anguilla this Saturday and I'm trying to figure out logistically how we get us and our luggage from St. Martin where we fly into to Malliouhana in Anguilla. Malliouhana will send a private boat to pick us up for a mere $350 - too much for folks of our means. So, we arrive in St. Martin, take a cab to the ferry. How far is it from the St. Martin airport to the ferry? How long will it take? How much should the cab ride cost for 4 people? Next, the ferry drops us in Anguilla. We have reserved a jeep with Hertz. Will Hertz have a location at where the ferry docks? If not, I presume its only location is at the airport...so how do we get 4 people and luggage to the Malliouhana the cheapest and easiest way and get the car picked up? Is the airport close to the ferry? How far is Malliouhana from the ferry? If we take a cab to the airport, all our luggage won't fit into the jeep. So, if a cab takes 4 of us from the ferry to the hotel, how much should this cost? And how much would a cab ride from Malliouhana to the airport cost?
Anyway, you get the idea. I've seen posts that a round-trip cab ride to a restaurant for 4 people in Anguilla was $30 per person so I wanted to make sure that we wouldn't go the circuitous route and still spend $350 to get there.

No need for such worries. The ride from Princess Juliana Airport to the Marigot ferry will cost you perhaps $20-$25 for all four of you if I remember correctly. The ferry and the various entance fees will run about $15 per person. My dollar amounts may be off a little as it's been a while but I can't imagine that I'm that far off. At least this will give you a rough idea on the price.

I don't know where Hertz's main location is but I'd be very surprised if they didn't agree to meet you with your car at the Anguilla ferry station at Blowing Point. If not, then just take a cab to your hotel and have Hertz deliver the car to the hotel. The cab ride to Meads Bay where the Malliouhana is located will cost $16 for all of you plus whatever amount you tip the driver.

To compare the cost of Malliouhana's private boat vs. the regular Juliana-Marigot ferry - the former, as you said, is $350 while the latter will cost your party about $80 (give or take a few dollars). Of course, the private boat will get you to Anguilla quicker and with less hassle. But, really, the hassle with the regular ferry is rather minimal.

I can answer some but not all of your questions:
1. It's about a 20 minute cab ride from SXM airport to Marigot where you get the ferry to Anguilla. Not sure of cost - probably around $25US.
2. The ferry will take you to Blowing Point on Anguilla.
2. Hertz does not have a rental location there - you'll have to take a cab to the Hertz rental office (I recall it has something to do with a local law to assist taxi owners). Many taxis are 9 passenger vans so you'll have plenty of room for luggage.
3. The Hertz office is about a 7 minute drive from the Blowing Point dock.
4. Malliouhana is about a 10 minute drive from the Hertz office.

Sorry it's been a while since I can't give you an accurate estimate of cab fares between Blowing Point and Hertz but I doubt it would be more than $30 US.

The cab ride from SXm to Marigot is about a half hour. For two it was $16 plus tip. At Marigot you pay a $3/person departure fee. The ferry is $12/person. No rental car agencies at Blowing Point. Cab drivers have to amke a living too. Cab to Malli will run about $15. If you go the ferry route you now need Passports to show in Marigot. Go to anguillaforum.com Taxi rates are in the general section and your questions will be answered in the travel section.

We stayed at Cap Juluca last May and rented a car from Hertz. They dropped the car off at Cap Juluca with the keys in the car. It was waiting there when we arrived. We didn't even have to sign for it. We had prepaid on our credit card and they left the contract there. When we left the island, they told us to leave it at the Ferry dock with the keys in the car and off we went. Strange but true!
Ask about the Cap Juluca Sea Shuttle, right from the airport. We had guests from CuisinArt on it with us. I think if Cap has room on their shuttle, they might let you take it. More money for them. It will save you the cab ride from St. Martin airport to the Ferry docks. www.capjuluca.com Have a great trip.

We just came back from a trip to Anguilla in mid feb. Since my husband has a tendancy to get sea sick, we opted for a private charter from the airport at St. Martin directly to the ferry dock at Anguilla. We arranged it through our resort, but there is a company called Fun Time (sorry don't have the number) and the cost was $60/pp each way. We thought it saved time getting to Anguilla. We then took a taxi from the ferry in Anguilla to the hotel (about $15 or so). We rented a car and it was delivered to the hotel the following day. Hope this helps.

Above posters have it right. Take cab to ferry. Ferry to Blowing Point. Cab from Blowing Point to M. Hertz will deliver your car to M and you drop it off at airport or ferry, and as has been said, leave the keys. Very easy. You save a day's rental fee if you don't take the car till the next day and just eat at M the first night (there are also other restaurants within walking distance, like Blanchards).

Car rental companies are not allowed to deliver to the Ferry Terminal, this is to protect the livelihood of the taxi drivers.

The taxi rates changed late last year, (see www.anguillaguide.com Travel Info). From what I can figure out the cost from Blowing Point (Zone 4) to Malliouhana (Zone 2) is:

$16 for 2 people and 2 bags. Additional people $4.00 each and additional bags $0.50 each.

In addition to St. Maarten taxi, departure tax, ferry cost, also be prepared to pay the person who carries your bags from the taxi onto the ferry and for the person who unload them at Blowing Point and brings it to you after you have cleared immigration/customs.

Due to the new rules to avoid congestion at the Blowing Point Ferry Terminal, private charters are no longer allowed to let the passengers back onto the boat (for transportation to their hotel) after immigration checks.
So regardless of private charter or not, you still have to get into a taxi from Blowing Point to your final destination.

Passports (incl. USA citizens) are now required upon entry in Anguilla.
