Anguilla - Can someone answer my questions?
We are planning a trip to Anguilla for two weeks in the first two weeks of August-
1. We have two young children 6 and 4 who love the beach and swimming what is the calmest beach(es)and are their local children for them to play with neraby?
2. When will Carnival start?
3. Shoal Bay Beach Hotel and Frangipani are on the top of my list of places to stay because they have kitchens and a swimming pool and affordable, what is nearby ex. food provisions, activities etc. Thank You

We were in Anguilla last summer and know both beaches - I think Shoal Bay Beach is probably the best for small children, there are many more children there and the water is very calm. Frangipani is not typically a place for children - they don't really have any activities for children. Also, the water at Mead's Bay can sometimes be a little rough. Hope this helps!

Although we always stay at Frangipani I agree with the above posted, Shoal Bay Beach east is probably a better bet for you. At SBBHotel only the four deluxe beachfront suites have A/C wwhich you will want in August so you ought to reserve soon. There are about six restaurants within walking distance that have finger type food for kids. You can even get hot dogs at Tropical Sunset. If you go to www.festival.ai you will find pictures of last years carnival along with a 2003 schedule of events. It is normally the first 10 days of August. Most of the grocery stores are in the Valley but you will want a rental car to explore the island and take part in carnival activities

I agree with the previous post, Shoal Bay is the better choice for a family. The water can be rougher at Frangipani than at SB. Also there are more kids to play with at Shoal Bay. If you walk up and around the corner of Shoal Bay you'll come to Gwen's Reggae Grill, very casual with lots of nice hammocks in the shade of the coconut grove.
Anguilla doesn't have a ton of organised activities for kids, but the beach is a great playground! There is a glass bottom boat at Shoal Bay, they might enjoy that. And also going out to Sandy Island for lunch and swimming. That's a very short ride from Sandy Ground, ask your hotel to call to arrange it or just go down to Sandy ground and ask anyone there. Sorry to be so vague. The ride is about $10 per adult, kids are free (?). A day out there is much cheaper than Scilly Cay, if money is a factor. My kids always preferred Sandy anyway.
Carnival starts the first weekend in August for a week. The most popular boat races are at Sandy Ground on the first Monday and at Meads Bay on the Thursday. Most events at Carnival village start very late in the evening and go on till almost early morning, I wouldn't suggest it for your little ones. They might like the parade of troupes through town on Friday afternoon, lots of (loud) music as the costumed dancers parade through town.
Another great beach for kids is Sandy Ground. Johnnos restaurant is right on the beach, near a small jetty where kids play. On Sunday afternoons they have jazz music. And in the early evening they set tables on the sand with tiki torches...very pretty. You could go there in the afternoon to hang out and have an early dinner. I don't think they have lounge chairs, we always just lie on our towels.
Shoal Bay and Frangipani are not very close to stores and a rental car is suggested not just for shopping but also exploring. Taxis are way too expensive. Ask your hotel if you can send them a little shopping list to get you through the first night and morning. Anguilla does not require car seats, soon I hope, but I always used a booster seat for my kids at that age which is easier to tote along.
Bring along a little cooler if you can, to carry juice/water/etc for the kids. I found a soft-sided six-pack style to work well and packs easily too. I used mine on the plane for their breakfasts!
I hope this helps, ask more questions if you'd like.

PS, the Cotton Gin ice cream parlor in town across the road from the Catholic Church is a good spot to stop and cool down. The ice cream store next to Ashley's supermarket is great too, but has nowhere to sit. But works if they want some on the drive to wherever. drip, drip
