My husband and I are planning a Caribbean trip the last week of August, and we're not sure where to go. We have a 2 year old and are looking for a place that is luxury but also not anti-toddler.
Our ideal hotel:
- Is new, recently renovated or kept in great shape
- Is relatively easy to get to from New York (non-stop flight with straightforward transfers)
- Is not crowded
- Has a great beach and/or pool, neither of which is too cold
- Has rooms that work well with a toddler (our daughter takes a long afternoon nap, so we need a room with a nice terrace or place to relax outside)
- Has great service and food
- Modern conveniences - has a nice gym and spa, TVs, babysitters, etc.
- Isn't sweltering in August
- For off-season pricing, looking to spend $300-350 for a standard room or up to $700 for a suite that works well with baby (factoring in free 4th night, etc.).
Our favorite place is the Banyan Tree Mayakoba - we have been there twice this year but would like to try something different this time, particularly since Riviera Maya is a little warm in August. If distance weren't an issue, we'd probably head to Punta Mita or Hawaii, but I don't want to spend that much time traveling and dealing with time zones. I have also ruled out other destinations we've been to recently including Turks & Caicos, St. Bart's and Harbour Island (the latter two also because they'd be a nightmare with a baby).
Would love to get fodorite views on the how following ideas stack up against my preferences and get any other suggestions:
- St. Regis or W in Puerto Rico - love that we could use points, but I'm concerned about the mixed reviews re service, food, beach, nickel and diming
- Viceroy Anguilla - we went there during its soft opening and had a great stay for our baby moon. Worth a return visit?
- Little Dix Bay - is it worth the money relative to what you get at BT/Viceroy? We were not wowed by Rosewood Mayakoba, so I'm not super high on Rosewood, but I've never been to the Virgin Islands and it looks gorgeous
- Westin St. John - too run down? Would love to see St. John, but something tells me I won't love this hotel or think it's good value
- FS Nevis - too hard to get to? is it that great?
- Carlisle Bay - don't know anything about this place but it looks interesting
- Jalousie or Cap Maison in St. Lucia - we stayed at Ladera years ago and loved it, but not sure the distance and transfers on those roads are a great idea with a toddler
- Somewhere in Bermuda?
Thank you for any advice you have!
