Accomodation and transport in Eleuthera, Bahamas

Hello !

My husband and I will be in Eleuthera, Bahamas. We're "backpack" style and have many questions

Our flight is already booked for Governor's Harbour Airport in the center. We want to rent a car there a day or two in the week, but for the rest of the time, (like airport-accommodation), which is the best way to travel? Is is possible to hitchhike?

If you have one or two places to stay for the full week it would be close to what city? We like to walk, see the sea and have a beach nearby, and a few restaurants and grocery markets or walk.

Last question: should we book the stay now or is it better to do it only for the days on arrival and then find the rest once on the island?

We also appreciate very much if you share your favorites to house not too expensive - and we know yet that the Bahamas are no cheap but we try to save a little money anyway...

Thank you !

When are you traveling? Makes a huge difference on recommending a place

You need a car the entire time, not enough traffic to hitch, no other transport

Long distances between things, so taxi would be a fortune, and you'd be stuck. Plus the fun of Eleuthera is exploring the different beaches.

To give example, straight driving (so no veering off roads to find beaches) takes about 4 hours by car, 2 more if aiming for Lighthouse Beach.

So secure the car as soon as you decide where to stay

Agree. If you don't rent a car you will miss out on all the fantastic beaches littered all over the island. If you do decide to limit your car rental to a couple of days then I would recommend you stay in Gov Harbour area and make sure your accommodation is close to French Leave beach.

Thank you, it helps a lot !

We'll be here beginning of January, we're looking for a place with a kitchen and not too expensive.

Everything is pretty much sold out until the 5th, after that what little is left is pretty expensive. It's the most popular time for islands.

What budget? Numbers please as descriptive words don't mean much to us!
