We are researching finding a new place to try for winter vacations. Over the last 6 years we have stayed in the village of Grand Case St. Martin five times, and Isla Mujeres once.
Here is our list of wishes, pretty sure we will not find all of them but figured I’d give it a try:
1) Comfortable, quiet, clean, safe accommodations with a patio on the beach. Does not need to be fancy; prefer to spend no more than $1,000 per couple for a week for accommodations. We not like “high rises”.
2) “Reasonable” travel distance from Portland Maine.
3) In or very close to a town so we can walk to shops and good reasonably priced restaurants.
4) Walkable beach – which is safe at night.
5) Lack of bugs.. this has become an issue since my fiancé has had pretty severe allergic reactions to either sand fleas or mosquitoes for the last five years.
6) Lack of or minor wind.. we found the Caribbean coast of Isla Mujeres uncomfortably windy.
Any advise on islands, towns, hotels, apartments, etc.? Thanks in advance.
A challenge: Pls help choose new vacation spot

I would say staying in Playa del Carmen fits almost all of those. The beach can be windy. There's a lot of non-chain (no high rises) hotels that are within walking distance of the town, which has great restaurants, bars and shops
Great idea. We loved Playa del Carmen when we visited many years ago on a high-rise trip to Cancun. I had forgotten about PDC.
And, I've done some bug research on this forum and am beginning to understand the effects of sand fleas and possible preventative measures.
Other ideas for vacation spot? I am now leaning towards villas with 2-4 couples. PDC is a definite option. What about Dominica or St. Croix? I think Costa Rico sounds interesting but it is pretty far away and tropical, correct?
Costa Rica would be just a bit farther from , say Montreal , than Barbados . It is very tropical so definitely a possibility for bugs , although I do find the bugs much worse here in Quebec.
