1st Timers for the DR

My girlfriend and I are looking to travel to the Dominican Republic and are really going into this blind. For starters, we've never known anyone else that has been to DR, so any advice on which destinations to visit would be great? We're in our late 20's and are looking mainly to relax on some nice beaches.

Just my opinion, but I liked the beaches better in Punta Cana than Puerto Plata. Sand is more white, less waves.

I stayed in the town of Boca Chica outside Santo Domingo.. The beaches are gorgeous, but this area isn't the greatest... If I return, I'd go to Punta Cana or Puerto Plata...The poverty on the roads leading to the capital and insidde the capital is astonishing....But I love that merengue music!!!!!!!!

Punta Cana definitley seems to be the hot spot. I just posted another message looking for more input. We're looking at 3 locations Punta Cana, La Romana, or Cabarete. Thanks -

I agree w/ wagonwheel. Punta Cana beaches are the nicest.

We were there once 5 years ago. The beaches in Punta Cana are gorgeous and a great place to relax. I am sure it has been built up since I was last there but outside of the resorts in Punta Cana there wasn't much else to do. As long as you are aware of this. There are some excursions to be taken from the resort. For R&R it is a great place.

I stayed in Cabarete 3 years ago. The beaches are much to windy. I found out after going, that wind surfing championships are held in Cabarete. So, since you're looking to relax on a nice beach, I would definitely choose Punta Cana.

Sunscape Casa DelMar in La Romana has the most gorgeous white sandy beach with turquoise warm water to die for.. this is the resort we are going back for the third time.In Punta Cana the beaches maybe much longer but not as nice...at least the ones we have been to (two). If you need info on CDM write [email protected]

It sounds like Cabarete has a more lively scene, along with great beaches (besides the wind). It seems that Punta Cana is lovely, but not much going on otherwise. How about La Romana?

Of course there are the usual side trips to Catalina and Sanona Island..there is a little villege within ten minutes walk along the beach to Bayahibe...If your a golfer there is the Leg of the Dog at Casa de campo. one of the hardest courses they tell me. But if your interested in relaxing...La romana and CDM is the place..the new owners have a beach party one night, a managers cocktail party, an animation group (entertainers). I just know this particular resort has the most gorgeous beach.. Oh yes.. you need not make reservations for their restaurants...a steak house, Chinese or Italian (very romantic place) or the buffet. I think there is a disco, but all that fresh air is too much....lol BTW lots of activities on the beach..snorkeling, etc.
