Widowed dad w/ 11 year old son in Niagara Falls

I will be taking my son to Niagara Falls, the 2nd to lst or the last week in July. I thought we would spend 3-4 days in the area, suggestions are desperately needed! We are driving from USA, I would like to keep the cost of a hotel to aprox $60 s night - again suggestions are needed!

The Maid of the Mist boat trip to the bottom of the falls is the best deal in town. the Butterfly Conservatory is worth anhour at most, but if the kid likes bugs, it's a great place to visit.

African Lion Safari is neareby, and there's a pretty good waterpark, so make sure you take bathing suits.

At 11, he's old enough to take pictures, so bring a camera would be a good idea.

Niagara on the Lake is worth a little visit, and he'll enjoy fudge, probably, and a visit to the old fort. And he'll enjoy looking across the river at the USA.

There's an airplane museum at the Hamilton Airport, and this, too, is worth a visit.

BAK

Niagara Parks Commission has a daily paa which is worth it as it includes bus system ("PeopleMover") and entrance to a number of Niagara Falls attractions - check the Niagara Parks website. On and around Clifton Hill, there are lots of tourist attractions, some call these tacky. There are firewroks over the Falls on Friday nights. You can also bike between Nigara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Depending on your child's tastes, there is excellent live theatre at the Shaw Festival in Niagar-on-the-Lake. There is a hiking path which takes you down into the Niagara Gorge which is interesting. All in all, more than enough to do for 3 days.

Thanks for the responses. Any suggestion for hotels near Niagra Falls less the $60-75 (USA Dollar)? I was also looking at the Ameri-Cana Resport but after coming across information re: Muskoka, I was thinking one day at the Falls and on to maybe Clevelands House. I have to admit, after Sept. 11th my head is still in a fog, and quite hoestly, my wife was the vacation planner.

Phil: I know right now (which doesn't help you for July, I realize), you can get a cityview room at the Marriott Fallsview for $60-something CANADIAN per night. The exchange rate is running about .62, I believe. We are getting a great deal at the Radisson Fallsview next week which works out to about $25/night USD per room with all the freebies they are throwing in. Do some homework and you should find something, because don't forget the very attractive exchange rate right now. Good luck

Hotel prices will go up in the summer-prime time. Good advice to stay on the Canadian side-your US dollar will go very far there. An overnight to the Falls and then a trip up to Muskoka would probably be a nice trip. In addition to the resorts, there are quite a few bed and breakfasts around the lakes which are more resonable than the resorts. If your'e going to Muskoka, check into black fly season-late july might be better than early July.

You can have a room at our Niagara on the Lake B&B for $70.U.S. per night for you and your son. This includes a full, hot breakfast. Check our website www.niagaraonthelakebb.com or call 905-468-3929. Would love to host your stay.
Take care, Elsa.

Dear Phil,

Have you thought of using Priceline? If you don't have a particular hotel in mind, you can pretty much narrow the location down. Go to BiddingForTravel.com site and read the boards before you bid. They offer great advice. You might have to wait a while before trying to bid, I was unsuccessful this week. Probably do better in a month or so. Good luck!

Phil, here's one you can try:

Holiday Inn By The Falls
5339 Murray Street
Niagara Falls ON L2G 2J3
Canada
[email protected]
Tel: (905) 356 1333

It is NOT a Holiday Inn -- perhaps it was at one time. But it's an easy walk to the falls, there is an indoor pool, it's a great location and I found it pretty reasonable. It's worth a shot.

Here's a website showing the hotel and you can also look for others, but I called the hotel directly when I booked:

http://niagara.falls.realhotelguide.com/hotels/100029.htm

Happy Contrails!

Book a hotel reservation NOW, they fill up fast. Days Inn North of the Falls has a variety of special plans, and shuttle service to everything it's called Peoplemover. Your son will enjoy Maid of the Mist and Journey behind the Falls, go up into the Skylon you can eat lunch there or dinner, there is also a hard rock cafe. As far as hotels, check on line and then call them yourself, I got an even better deal than what I was offered online, and exactly what I wanted. When you call, have your CC ready, you will find what you want, snap it up, if you think about it, it will be GONE. My son BEGS to go back, this year we are taking his friends!! Threr is also a Ripley's museum. HAVE FUN.
