British Columbia's Glacier National Park and Mount Revelstoke National Park are beautiful. However, it would be crazy to short change the Moraine Lake / Lake Louise area in exchange for seeing GNP and Revelstoke, in my opinion.
Banff to Revelstoke is about 4 hours each way, so getting to Revelstoke and back again would take about 8 hours, not counting stops.
The Moraine Lake / Lake Louise area, on the other hand, is just under an hour from Banff. Be sure to include a visit to Moraine Lake, and be sure to climb the pile of rocks at the north end of the lake. The view from there, if you can catch it in sunlight, is a joy to behold.
very helpful-thank you so much!
Glacier NP (Canada) is a park of steep, jagged peaks and deep valleys. The hiking trails in Glacier are mostly steep challenges because of the uphill demands.
If you are in good condition, and yu can be in the park on a clear day, Glacier's trails can be very rewarding.
Perley Rock, for example, is a lung buster for the ill conditioned.
The formerly fun hike in the park was to the toe of the Illecillewaet Glacier. Unfortunately, the glacier has receded and what you see from the overlook on the Trans Canada is the slick cliff face that marks the former terminus of the glacier itself.
Avalanche Crest is another outstanding but arduous walk along the crest of the ridge that spawns avalanches in the winter which at times threaten the Trans Canada Highway.
Whether or not this park is worth it is a function of whether or not you are able to handle it physically.
