My husband and I are driving up to Montreal from NYC with friends of ours for a long weekend. We plan to leave around 5 AM. Do you have any suggestions of places to stop along the way? Perhaps a picturesque lunch spot?

If you leave NY around 5 a.m. you should be able to get to Montreal in about 7 hours and have lunch there
Gosh, you are not going to want to sit on your butt for 7 hours straight!
There are many stops along Interstate 87 -- watch the signs to tell you which ones have restrooms and vending machines. We packed a lunch (for both directions)...I'm trying to remember the name of the stop (High Peaks? Twin Peaks? Peaks?) There were picnic tables and a grassy area for a little walk. If the name comes to me, I'll let you know.
I would suggest a brunch break at Saratoga Springs.

seetheworld--You obviously don't travel with my husband when he is en route to somewhere like Montreal! I agree the Northway (section of I-87 in the Adirondacks) is a logical place to stop briefly. The area north of the US border is flatter, less scenic.
My husband actually would make a few pit stops along the way but would press on to Montreal to maximize his time (and eating) there.
Michelle--regardless of where/when you eat en route, you should be sure to get gas in the U.S. rather than Canada. Much less expensive
I agree on the gas.
Also, there is a Duty Free store located right before the border crossing -- much less expensive as well.
