Where to stay in St Johns?

We are going to be in St Johns for a week at the end of September travelling with our 11 month old son. Does anyone have recommendations of a good place in or close to St Johns to stay while we check out the sites in that area. My husband would like to be close to or on the water. We are looking at less than $120 a night if possible. We were thinking it would be fun to stay at a B&B but I have never done that before and I'm not sure if it would be the best thing to do with a baby.. maybe a hotel/motel would be better???
