Where to go for colour on Thanksgiving.

We'd like to take our houseguests out to the country (outside of Toronto) on Thanksgiving Day. I'm considering NOTL because it's so pretty, but if we could go a bit north, the leaves would probably be nicer.

Here's my wish list: I'd like a charming town where the stores and restaurants will be open on Monday (not for T'giving dinner but just a nice lunch), no more than about an hour or an hour and a half from Toronto. Driving time is important since we'll have to get them to the airport by late afternoon. A fair or other special event would be nice but it's not necessary. Just a walk around town, browsing in shops and having a nice lunch would be fine.

Any suggestions?

It's the last day of the Sensational Elora Festival, which might be interesting.

Might I suggest the Beaver Valley, Collingwood, Meaford area. You can stop and buy some lovely Canadian apples.

Bellefountain by the Forks of the Credit's a nice visit. Closer than NOTL.

Alternatively, you might want to consider Highway 81 which runs parallel to the QEW if it's south you want to go. I can't speak for the colours just now but it's a lovely trip any time of the year.

Excellent suggestions -- thanks so much! I'm going to look into all of them but I have to say that the last day of the Elora festival sounds just about right. I've been to Elora and I think the colours will be gorgeous next week and my guests love that kind of arts festival.

laverendrye, if we do go to Elora, do you think I should make a reservation for lunch at the Elora Mill or can you suggest another restaurant. It doesn't have to be fancy but I'd like the food to be good. Our friends always take us to wonderful places when we visit them in DC.

Goddess--I'd definitely make a reservation at the Mill. It's been a few years, but we certainly enjoyed it.

WEll, I'm just back from vacation, and am half dead on my feet... but was so happy that the first post I clicked on was from you and that I even had some advice to offer!!!

I have a little booklet on all the fall drives..
The website listed in the booklet is www.ontariotravel.net/falldrives
My favourite it number 11, called The Hills of the Headwaters.
It goes up around Belfountain (good choice knickerbocker!) and the Forks of the Credit and Caledon.

Good luck... and have fun.

Hi kodi,
So good to hear from you! Are you just back from California? I hear you had a lovely visit with LoveItaly and Toedtoes. I was green with envy!

Thanks for the website -- I'm going to take a look at it, especially #11.

Hi goddess - Highway 10 which is Hurontario Road in Mississauga is a great drive in the fall - it goes past Chudleigh apple farms. Of course, since I did it a few years ago perhaps it's been developed (ruined) with housing.

What about St. Jacob's?

Collingwood area was a good suggestion, too.

Another link for colour reports:

another one:

http://www.ontariotravel.net/publica...lourreport.pdf but this sounds as if it's the same link kodi provided.
