What's wi-fi like in Vancouver?

Is it generally available?

I'm heading to Vancouver next month for the Olympics and would like to be able to receive texts & calls without taking out an international roaming pkg for my locked iPhone. Hoping maybe even a sponsor has blanketed the city for the Games?

Enjoy-la!

I'm not there, but I do believe the free Starbucks wifi I enjoy in Ontario is available in BC, too.

There are countless cafes that offer free wifi - Waves, Blenz, etc. There are such cafes on every block of Vancouver. Alternatively, you can always "borrow" wireless from somebody's rogue server.

This is entirely based off of my limited experience using my laptop around downtown, strategically choosing where I intend to connect. I don't have an iphone or a Blackberry so haven't used wifi on a whim. However, my friends often do all over downtown without an issue.

Have you been to Vancouver before?

It's a young city -- even the old people are young, and while they are outdoors kinds of folks, they are also probably Canada's most up to date technologically.

Combine the desire to be outdoors with the desire to use high tech stuff, and you'll find lots of WiFi.

It's a great city, and other than the Olympics, you'll find great other things to do and see, no matter what your interests are.

Enjoy your visit.

Thx a mint, BAK...recognize your screenname from many informative posts! Yes, I've been to Vancouver many times but just got my iPhone last fall so never been there while trying to get wi-fi. I hope to get Olympic and traffic updates while there.

Enjoy-la!

Reading your post brought to mind the last few years as I returned to school to (finally) complete my bachelor's degree. It was an online school, full time, and I was continually searching for wifi any time we travelled. In Vancouver, our timeshare did not (gasp!) have wifi, but a coffee shop a couple of blocks away did - maybe Blenz? It was free, but you had to ask for the daily access code.

As others have said, wifi is plentiful. You should be well served.
