What happens with a 1:30 AM arrival in YVR?
Coming in from NYC and arriving at 1:30 AM so I'll need to cross customs. But I would imagine it'd be closed then? So what happens? Will we have to wait at the gate till 8??

What would happen if you arrived in NYC at 130 am? And why do you think YVR would be different?

I don't know, never arrived at any airport at 130 am! And if I did, different country, different customs?

It won't be an issue. Customs/security is staffed to international standards.

There will always be a cranky border guard waiting for you. So no worries there.

Unfortunately, skytrain won't be running at that time so you will have to take a cab into town. Probably around $35.

considering how horribly long the customs line was one recent afternoon at YVR, perhaps arriving at 0130 will be to your advantage. and the casino just outside the airport will still be open - go wild! btw - i like your moniker
