it seems that the ferry stops prior to our trip to newfoundland and would appreciate any advise on optional ways to go from one coast to the other other than driving, or is there more than one ferry line? thank you.

What do you mean???? What ferry? from where? stopping where? I am confused.
I think she is talking about the west coast and east coast of NF, but Grace please be more clear.
There is only one ferry line, Marine Atlantic. There are 2 routes that both leave from North Sydney, NS, one to Port-aux-basques (west coast, 6 hr ride, open all year round), and one to Argentia (east coast, 14 hr ride, only open in summer this year till Sept. 30).
I think you are confused there are NO stops on either of the routes. They go directly from NS to their destination. Port-aux-basques is about a 10 hour drive from St. John's, and Argentia is less than 2 hours away (but is usually more than twice as expensive as the short ferry).
The options to get form the west coast to the east coast are rather limited. There are no railways in NF. You can drive as mentioned, fly - but as mentioned in your other post you would have to get to Stephenville from Port-aux-basques, or take a bus by DRL coach lines.
The bus leaves Port-aux-basques at 8 AM everyday, makes stops along the way and arrives in St. John's around 10 PM. It costs around $100 one way I think. Look them up on the internet for more info.
JONAS, thanks very much for your response, much information and just what i was looking for!
