Was Shipping News filmed....

Was Shipping News filmed in Newfoundland in the approximate locale described by Proulx (yes, I know it's fiction)-- or in some surrogate place "passing" as Nfld? Film hasn't opened in my town yet, so I can't check the credits --but curious.

It was filmed in Nfld., although I cant remember the exact location. There was just a lengthy article in our local paper about the film actors and where they stayed, ate, mingled at local pub, etc. The B&B where they stayed is now getting some press and selling some type of "package" I believe, "stay where so and so stayed" type of thing. The article quoted the the actors' interviews discussing how beautiful and great they thought Nfld. was.

The scenery in The Shipping News was a character all in it's self I think. I have heard Kevin Spacey mention that TSN was filmed in Port Rexton. Wasn't some of it also filmed in Halifax too?

Yes some was filmed in Nova Scotia too. They used a Halifax newspaper office for some shots and the house being pulled across the water was filmed on a beach here. They all drank and ate out in Halifax with all the locals and were a big hit here!

Proulx Fan, I'm in Ottawa, the local paper is the Ottawa Citizen. The article ran about 2-3 weeks ago, maybe longer, I'm not quite sure. Maybe they have it archived on their website. Havent seen the movie yet, hoping to get to it soon!

Deb, Sorry, I havent been to the Ottawa Citizen website in awhile, (read my newspaper daily in the "hard copy" format), but the site has changed considerably since I was last looking for an article in the archives! It seems they have now "combined" it with all of their other newspapers and stuff and they only archive for 14 days now. I guess they are cutting down/back. It used to be that you could find all the things you wanted from as long ago as a few years back. I searched for the article but unfortunately I couldnt find it for you. Sorry about that, "technology" not woking too well on this one!

Thanks all -- although still not clear on specifically which town is involved. But saw the film last night and enjoyed it a great deal. Won't go into book vs. movie comparison, but delighted to see the scenery, get the "feel" of Nfld.

BTW: Do native N'f'landers pronounce it with the accent on the first syllable and the last syllable "swallowed" ("NEWF'ndl'nd") or fully pronounced, as in the movie (NEWF'ind-land")?

I heard a politician from Newfoundland being interviewed on the radio, and he said it was pronounced to rhyme with "understand."

Yes the Shipping News was partly filmed in Newfoundland, Trinity Bay, and Port Rexton area. I understand that some of the actors stayed in the local B&B there. Great scenery and I admit I live here in St. John's. Can't beat the view of any harbour, in any cove, in New -fun -land, stress on the "fun".

It was filmed mostly in Trinity, a beautifully quaint little town that will make you feel like you're back in the 1800s! The actors all stayed in a couple of small B&Bs there - Trinity gets a fair number of visitors each year. Word has it that Kevin Spacey brought 4 bodyguards with him, and sent 3 home again the next day.

Christy<BR
