Victoria B&B

Does anyone have any opinions or information about The Gatsby Mansion or Ryan's Bed and Breakfast? I've found the information on their web site but I was hoping for some feedback from anyone who may have stayed there or knows the area. Thanks!

I only know the area. Ryan's may be nice for all I know, but lower Superior Street, while not far from the major sights, is in my opinion a little grubby. The Gatsby is a lovely old mansion overlooking the inner harbour. I have only been there for breakfast which was quite good, but I'd have to say that the place was a little worn around the edges. Attractive garden though. My accommodations guide shows it listed at $105-$205 double, off season. I'm not sure the character is worth it. It seems to share eating privileges with the Ramada Huntingdon Manor behind it ($83-$163 double, off season). Its country manor style is comfortable not stuffy.

Just down the street from the Gatsby on the water side is the Admiral Motel listed at $59-$89 off season. I've not been inside but it seems popular. Amazing price for the location.

If character and a great view aren't important but location is, you might also consider the Embassy Inn ($59-$75) right next to the 'parliament' buildings and a block off the harbour.

Between it and the Huntingdon is the Royal Scot Suite Hotel ($83-$163).

If you prefer to eat in and have the cooking facilities there is a grocery store straight up Menzies Street just a few blocks away from all these hotels.

I'm not sure when "off season" begins.
Of course if your heart is set on a B & B in the James Bay area, any of the following might fit the bill:

Holland House
Berry House
Birdcage Walk Guest House
Edwardian Inn
The Inn on St. Andrews
Medana
Laird House
as well as Ryan's.

Hi Susan, I have been to Ryan's and I am a bit surprised to hear the area described as grubby. It seemed like a nice, quiet, residential neighborhood to me, and the B&B itself is fine--not super fancy, but comfortable, with a very warm and hospitable hostess. I'm not familiar with the Gatsby, although I believe it's managed by the Ramada Huntingdon next door.

That was just my personal opinion, not everyone's of course. It could very well be nice & quiet. Good to get another opinion in any case.
