Via Rail to Victoria from Naniamo
My husband and I plan to take the ferry from Vancouver to Naniamo, rent a car, spend some time in Tofino, then return the car in Naniamo. We want to take the train to Victoria, but the web-site doesn't tell you the whereabouts of the station in Naniamo. Is it near the ferry or downtown? Then when we arrive in Victoria, it looks to me like it's in downtown and should be within a short cab-ride to our hotel (Chateau Victoria). Is that correct? Can anybody help with the train info? We will also need to ferry back to Vancouver...any suggestions on the easiest/most economical way to get to the ferry from Victoria?

I just returned from a week visit to Vancouver Island. We were staying at a resort right above Naniamo and had looked into taking the train into Victoria. We were warned however that there is only one morning train going there and one early afternoon train coming back. So you would definitely need to spend the night in Victoria to make it a worthwhile journey. Unfortunately that was the only information that we were able to obtain and then chose to just drive instead. There are a few visitor centers around the island with very friendly staff, so you might want to contact them for more info.

I can't remember where the train station is in Nanaimo but I think it is downtown or just on the outskirts. Bob's right - the train trip to Victoria is not very interesting so you might want to consider his suggestion.

From the train station in Victoria to your hotel would be a short cab trip. An easy walk without luggage.

Most economical way to get to the ferry from Victoria would probably be the city buses. But it depends on what you're doing on the other side. If you were going straight into Vancouver, the easiest way is by Pacific Coachlines bus, downtown to downtown, ferry trip included.
