Where are you coming from? Vancouver is a beautiful city and there is lots to do in and around the city, depending on your interests. It would be quite easy to fill 3 or 4 days.
Driving to the Island will mean renting a car and taking it onto the ferry. You may want to walk on as a foot passenger and look at he cost of getting a car in Victoria or Nanaimo depending on your desired destinations.
HelloBC website is a good resource for visitor info.

We are from coastal Georgia and haven't traveled to the NW. We plan on flying into Vancouver and renting a car. We plan to go over to Vancouver Island for at least a couple of days. Let us know if there is something we shouldn't miss while we are in the area.

As others have told you, Vancouver, B.C. is not on Vancouver Island. If you fly into Seattle you have several ways to reach the island. You can take a passenger ferry from Seattle to Victoria, take passenger/car ferry from Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula, take the passenger/car ferry from Anacortes, WA to Sydney, drive or take a train from Seattle to the city of Vancouver and take a ferry to Vancouver Island.
If I were you I would look at a map and get a guide book at your local library. Then come back

Unlike coastal Georiga, public transport in Vancouver is excellent and a car would be a nuisance there. Also, you don't need a car to reach Vancouver Island from Vancouver. You can take a bus (or a small plane, for that matter). Vancouver and Victoria plus Butchart Gardens have enough to occupy you for the short time you have. If you really want to explore the island rather than Vancouver and Victoria then you might rent a car. Agree that time with a map and a guide book would be well spent.

I grew up in Vancouver, moved to Victoria on the Island a few years ago and I cannot stand Vancouver anymore. If you like a more peaceful setting with rainforests, great food and epic beaches then the mainland just doesn't hold a candle.

Hi,
Vancouver Island is a pretty special paradise and, while I do enjoy a trip to Vancouver, I would definitely spend more time on the Island.
For starters, the South Island has plenty to see and do including Victoria and the Cowichan Valley (think wineries, artisan goods, farms and beautiful scenery). Then, heading West is an incredible world of stunning beaches, towering trees and unbeatable nature. You can go fishing, try out surfing, do kayaking/SUP boarding and hiking all in one place! Ucluelet is a bit quieter than Tofino (about 30min south) and makes for a relaxing stay, while keeping the bustle of the Tofino summer crowd within reach.
Here's a video I came across of the Island to give you a better idea of what's in store: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzvpVUKH8KY
Another good website for Victoria is www.VictoriaBC.ca
Cheers!
