Vancouver Trip Feb 16-20,2015
Need some help! My daughter and I will be in Vancouver BC February 16-20. She asked for this trip to celebrate her 18th birthday which is on Thursday the 19th. We are staying at the Blue Horizon downtown and will be arriving by train from Seattle. I need things to do other than just "shop". She loves live theater and other events like that. We are also looking for a good place to have a nice dinner to celebrate her birthday in a special way on the 19th - plus other good places to eat and explore. We are not planning on having a car but are fine with taking public transport.
Ideas? advice?? HELP!

It's too bad you're not here right now, as the PuSh Festival (performing arts fest) is happening right now, and there's a lot of great shows happening - dance, theatre, performance art, etc.
For theatre and such, consider half price tickets at Tickets Tonight downtown (in the Tourism Vancouver info centre). Pick up a free copy of the Georgia Straight newspaper, the weekly arts & entertainment paper. Look up the Cultch, the Arts Club, the Stanley Theatre, Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse, Waterfront Theatre, Chan Centre for Performing Arts, the Gateway Theatre (in nearby Richmond), the Orpheum Theatre, and the Vogue Theatre. In February, for something different, the Talking Stick Festival is happening - aboriginal performing arts.
Places to shop - my favourite is along Main Street "Mount Pleasant" is the northern street of Main between E 5th and E 16th, and "Riley Park" is the other, from about E 6th south to E 33rd. Look up "Front & Company" "8th and Main", "Eugene Choo", "Vancouver Special" "Pulp Fiction" "Red Cat Records" "Regional Assembly of Text" "Scout Boutique" - just to get a sense of the shopping. If you don't hit up this area of Vancouver, you're missing out on some unique to Vancouver clothing boutiques and unique stores in general. Plus, there are some good restaurants and cafes around here too. And some craft breweries, if you're into that, although your daughter won't be able to taste any, as the legal drinking age is 19 here.
A nice dinner. Gosh, where to even begin? Look up the restaurants in VancouverMagazine.com or ScoutMagazine.ca to get a taste of what she can choose from. There are so many. Is there a specific kind of food she likes? Vancouver's a foodie city and there are tons of places to go to.

Wish I could edit above! I see I made a typo. "Mount Pleasant" is the northern end of Main Street, is what I meant to say. Technically the neighbourhoods are called Mount Pleasant and Riley Park, but most locals just call the whole area "Main Street".

I would like to know if you and your daughter have ever been to Vancouver before. (or Canada in general?)
My first impulse, as to the dinner, is to suggest Grouse Mountain, and the <i>Observatory</i> restaurant at the top.
The cost would be <b>considerable</b> but at least know that <i>with <b>advance reservations</b></i> the $40-ish cost per person of the gondola ride up the mountain is waived.
Vancouver is so filled with things to do, and its downtown core is so compacted by water on most sides, that you can't go wrong if just playing the rest by ear. Getting around is easy, and I think if you decide that you like the Grouse Mountain dining idea, and then just <I>build the rest of your experience around that</i>, you will be quite content.
Be aware that both of you will need either passports or <I>Enhanced Driver's Licenses</i> to gain entry into Canada.
