UPDATED TRIP TO THE CANADIAN ROCKIES 20/05/2007
Dear Judith,
Thank you very much for your helpful comments.
As a result, we ammended the itinerary, but we still have some more questions.
Right now our plan is as follows:
2 nights in Vancouver (incoming flight to Vancouver at 10.25 AM , June 17th).
2 nights in Vancouver Island?
1 night in Pemberton.
1 night in Clearwater.
3 nights in Jasper.
3 nights in Field.
2 nights in Canmore? Our first intention was to stay 3 nights in Canmore.
1 night in Kamloops or Revelstok?.
1 night somewhere on the way to Vancouver – where do you recommend to spend the night?
1 night in Vancouver (flying back on the 4th of July at 09.00 AM.
Please comment the upper question marks.
We doubt if it is worth while visiting Park Kootenay.
With appreciation,
Moshe and Ayala

moshe: Now I see you did re-post this on Canada. However - it should be attached to the original thread where judith gave you advice. Post it as a response to that thread so all of the discussion stays together

Hello Moshe and Ayala,
>>>>>>2 nights in Vancouver Island?<<<<<<
With only 2 nights on Vancouver Island, I suggest you stay in Victoria. Unfortunately I cannot recommend a hotel in Victoria, as I've always stayed with friends there. However, I trust other posters will be able to help you with Victoria accommodation.
>>>>>>2 nights in Canmore? Our first intention was to stay 3 nights in Canmore.<<<<<<
I think that, in the overall context of your trip, it's a good thing that you've cut Canmore down to 2 nights.
>>>>>>1 night in Kamloops or Revelstok?<<<<<<
I suggest neither. I suggest that you stay in the Okanagan Valley instead (somewhere like Penticton, Oliver or Osoyoos).
Since you'll have a fairly generous amount of time in Field, you'll be able to see Yoho National Park's main attractions while you're staying there. You won't have to rely on the day on which you travel further west to see Takakkaw Falls and Emerald Lake. So I think you can be a bit more ambitious and drive through the Okanagan Valley, which will add a little bit of driving time to your journey.
>>>>>>1 night somewhere on the way to Vancouver – where do you recommend to spend the night?<<<<<<
You'll be catching a 9.00 a.m. flight the next morning. If it was my trip, I would check in at Vancouver International Airport 3 hours ahead of my flight, so at 6.00 a.m. That may sound like overkill, but Vancouver Airport can be busy. Certainly I would not check in any later than 7.00 a.m.
Given that that is the case, I think you should stay near the airport, which is in Richmond, to the south of Vancouver. Again, I have no personal experience of hotels there, and will leave it to other posters to make recommendations.
>>>>>>We doubt if it is worth while visiting Park Kootenay.<<<<<<
The road that runs through Kootenay National Park is highly scenic. Since you'll have 3 nights in Field, it's possible that you'll be able to fit in Kootenay National Park as well. I think you should keep an open mind about it, and see how things go when you're in the mountains.

I forgot to suggest accommodation in Canmore. If I remember correctly, you were looking for affordable accommodation. You might try Rocky Mountain Ski Lodge or Drake Inn. They provide good value for money, by the standards of the Canadian Rockies. Bow Valley Motel also is relatively reasonably priced.
If you want to go a little upscale from there, you might try Georgetown Inn or Lady Macdonald Country Inn.
July 1st will be Canada Day, and the long weekend (from the Friday up to and including the Monday) will be very busy from a tourist point of view. What I mean is that accommodations most likely will be pretty full, and it will be prudent to have advanced reservations.
The busy period continues beyond July 1st, because Americans have their Independence Day holiday on July 4th, and American vacation traffic spills over into Canada.
