my wife and I are planning a week in vancouver in late july and have some questions. We'll be staying at the Destinations at Rosedale on Robson (the time share side of the Aviawest hoel on Hamilton street). Supposedly the hotel is close to the new library.
Our questions are? Is Grouse mountain worth the trip? Is it better to go during daylight or in the evening? have checked out two tours and can't decide. Actually considered going up on sunday morning for bunch and the afternoon but not sure how difficult it would be to get there on our own. will not be renting a car but will consider simple public trans or even a cab if it makes sense.
Is it true that the major museum at UBC is closed for renovations for the summer?
can anyone advise about the weekend flea market on Terminal Ave-worthwhile-easy to get to from Yaletown?
finally I understand that the week we are there vancouver is hosting a fireworks competition. where would be the best place to watch these?
thanks for your help

I think Grouse Mountain in the evening is to be preferred over the daytime unless you want to hike -- beautiful shades of colour in the sunset facing the West.
Should you take a cab from downtown, I would estimate the cost to be about $20-25 each way.
The Museum of Anthropology is undergoing a $52MM renovation over the next 3 years, but all its permanent galleries will remain open. It is a wonderful, unique museum.
I don't think the flea market on Terminal Avenue is really worth a trip, but from Yaletown it's about a $15 cab ride. You wouldn't want to walk there.
The "Celebration of Light" fireworks event is a summer ritual in Vancouver:
http://www.hsbccelebrationoflight.com/fireworks/. The best place to watch from is English Bay (versus Kitsilano, on the other side of the bay). However, to stake out a prime place to put your blanket down means getting there hours in advance of the 10 p.m. start on each of the 4 nights and being prepared to jostle for position. The few restaurants with views of the bay will probably have been booked long ago. My suggestion would be to go to the West End (on foot or by bus or taxi) to have dinner at a West End restaurant around 7:30 p.m. -- search this forum for "Raincity Grill" (probably already booked), "Delilah's", "Cafe de Paris" or especially on fireworks nights because its hidden away on a "back route" to the bay itself, "Parkside Restaurant" at Gilford and Haro (4 blocks to good viewing at Gilford and Beach Avenue). There are some more casual places I would recommend as well -- search "Denman Street". By leaving the restaurant just before the fireworks start, you won't have a view of the fireworks at water level -- cascading waterfall effects etc. - but you'll be able to see everything else, and you'll be well-fed and happy and have the strength to walk back to your hotel. Which will take about 25 minutes, by the way.
