We are coming to Toronto for the film festival in September and are looking for a reasonable (preferably under $150 US a night) and convenient place to stay. We are open to B&Bs, but want a private bath, and from what I have read, many are in questionable areas. The Holiday Inn Express on Lombard street has availability,is in our price range and seems to have pretty good reviews. How is this hotel? Any other suggestions? TIA!

I've never stayed at the hotel so I can't give you any opinion on it, but the location is good. You're about a five minute walk from the very nice St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood and a five minutes walk from Yonge Street and the subway. Lots of restaurants and nice street life.

Otherwise, you could try the One King Street West (that's the name as well as the address), or the Strathcona Hotel, or Novotel on Front Street. If you're from the US, try Priceline (not available to Canadians). I know someone who got a room in a very nice downtown hotel in May for $55!

We stayed at the Holiday Inn on King Street in 2004.Rooms were nice and spacious and a high floor room facing west gave a good view.Facilities were good with an outdoor pool on one of the higher levels,great for reading the paper in the mornings.The location is good with a lot of the tourist areas accessible by foot.There were a few nice local restuarants nearby and a couple of early morning coffee emporiums to get your day off to a flying start.

The Hotel Victoria on Yonge Street is reasonably placed, and well located.

Remember that inToronto, $150 is on the low end, and duringthe film festival, there are a lot of visitors to town.

Do a search through the fourm and you'll find more about B &Bs. This is not, however, a B&B kind of a city.

I think the One King West idea is a good one.

Thanks for all of the responses. The Strathcona shows no rooms available and One King West is over $300 a night. I have contacted Hotel Victoria, hopefully they will have something.

I have thought about using Priceline (used it once before and it worked out well), but I am concerned about what if anything would be available because of the film festival, but it might be worth a try.

I suggest trying Novotel downtown on the Esplanade.

This is a nice building. http://www.skylinesuites.com/8park.html It's actually a condo, but a company owns a bunch of suites and rents them as hotel rooms. It's attached to the subway by underground and also you can get to the Varsity Theatre, where most of the screenings are, without going outside. The Cumberland theatre is about three blocks away.

Just minutes ago I bid on a 4 star hotel on Priceline for the weekend of Aug 19 at $69 a night and received the Sheraton City Center. I have never stayed here but the reviews look positive and seems to be in the heart of the city. It might be worth a shot

Excellent location, right in the heart of the city. I know someone else who got it on Priceline and was very pleased with their room.

We have stayed at the Sheraton City Centre and Novotel on the Esplanade - both are great with excellent locations.

Availability might not be great on priceline, but it's worth a try. Bid for 4* or better and see what turns up. If not, another option to consider would be the Holiday Inn (formerly Quality Hotel) Midtown on Bloor St West. It's only a few blocks from where one of the key film festival areas is located (Yorkville), but in the heart of the university district. Safe, lively, good value cafes, etc. Excellent subway connections, too (you've got nearby access to both the N-S and E-W lines).
