Thoughts on a honeymoon in Quebec City
Hi all,
Looking for honeymoon ideas for our early June 2016 honeymoon (wedding date is June 4), and someone has suggested New England/Canada area. Although we are still sorting through ideas before making our final decision, this area has really piqued our interests after a little bit of research. General itinerary (if we choose this route) would be fly to Boston (from VA), spend a couple days there before driving to Kennebunkport, ME for a few days, then returning the rental car and flying to Quebec City for another few days before flying home. The old world look of Quebec City (from what I've seen) really interests us more so than the other Canadian cities (i.e. Montreal). We have also considered possibly doing Niagara Falls and Toronto in combination with Watkins Glen SP in NY, but this is not as high on our list as New England and Quebec City.
So, question is, what are everyone's thoughts? I've never been to Canada or the New England area, so have no idea what to expect. Regarding weather, time of year, tourist season, etc. , is early June a good time to come? What are some suggestions of must sees or things to do? Relatively budget friendly but nice hotels (no more than $200-250/night)? What area should we stay in or avoid? What to use for transportation? We are fine with walking, just weren't sure how far between different sites. Any advice/tips would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Also, a side note - our reasoning for driving back to Boston to fly to Quebec is that we are finding it's very expensive to pick up a rental car in the US and drop it off in Canada. So it just seems cheaper (and easier if we don't need a car in Quebec) to just fly in.

I'll add a few comments since no one else has done so yet. If you are flying to Quebec City, you might want to look at flying from Portland Maine, a very fun little city.
You definitely don't want a car in QC, it's fairly compact and very walkable (at least the more interesting old city).
However, if you are going to be there for more than a few days, you might want to rent a car to explore places like Ile D'Orleans and Montmorency falls. You might even want to drive a few hours northeast of the city to the Charlevoix area, which is very scenic and unique.
Contact the province of Quebec tourist office (quebecoriginal.com) where you can request their free tourist guides for all the districts of Quebec - Quebec City, Montreal, Charleviox, etc.

Hi Virginia,
I think Quebec City would be lovely for a honeymoon in June. It has a very European feel and is the perfect size for walking around. You definitely don't need a car.
Here's my QC long weekend trip report. It's a few years old now but may still be helpful to you. We particularly liked our hotel:
http://www.fodors.com/community/cana...nd-quebec-city.
I hear the Charlevoix area is quite beautiful as well but other than that, I have no experience there to offer. It's on my go-to list, though.
Congrats on your wedding!

Thank you both for your help. zootsi, thanks for suggestion of flying from Portland. That would be so much better than having to drive back to Boston! Goddesstogo, your trip report was very helpful, and the hotel you stayed in sounds wonderful! I love the idea of breakfast being brought to our door
Based on the general itinerary I've come up with (in order to get an idea of budget), it looks like we would have 2 full days and then whatever is left on the day we fly in. I've done a little more research, and it sounds like we could walk around and see the biggest Old Town city sights in one day. First of all is this possible?
Second, it sounds like the next closest place and maybe most interesting would be Ile d'Orleans. I'd really like to see Montmorency Falls as well. Possible to combine both of those in a day? If we have to rent a car then I'd like to just do it for one day. Or is there some type of transportation that we could take to Montmorency Falls? When I googled it, it said that it was only about 15 minutes from Old City Quebec.
Third, something that came up when I was researching was Wendake. Has anyone ever been here or have any suggestions about it? It looked interesting and the food at the restaurant there looked really good as well. Is this something that could be done in an afternoon? Maybe combine this and Ile d'Orleans?
I'm really just trying to get an idea of what is reasonable to do (and worth doing) in the amount of time we would probably have there.

I too LOVE the idea of QC for a honeymoon.
And don't limit yourselves to the walled city, as there are other areas, even with brick roads, very much worth seeing.
I even endorse an entire honeymoon in QC.

NorthwestMale, the more I research on QC the longer I want to stay! But the Maine coastline has always been on my wish list and sounds so relaxing for a honeymoon, and my fiancé is really liking the idea of Boston for the history and the Red Sox (huge fan).
What are your best recommendations based on our limited time? I'm very interested to hear what anyone has to say about Wendake. What do you think of the things I mentioned above? And what areas outside the walled city do you particularly recommend? I plan to request a tourist guide as zootsi recommended, but would love to hear personal opinions as well!

I would give all 3 of your choices a 10. I would think 3 nights at each might be about right. If you had to cut one a little short, I would choose Quebec City, since it's fairly small. However, if you rent a car in Quebec, you could easily spend the whole honeymoon there. I do believe there is public transportation to Montmorency. The falls are impressive, but right on a busy highway. As for Wendlake, I remember visiting a native american complex close to QC about 20 years ago, it was somewhat underwheliming. Of course a lot can change in 20 years. As for the rest of the city, the Grande Alee is a stretch of nice restaurants, clubs and such just outside the old city. The rest of QC is ok, but pales in comparison to the walled section, which is probably the most picturesque city in North America.

Hi Virginia...
My first interest in figuring out what to suggest to you would be based on where you're from...
So I first drew a hint from your name (albeit still potentially a guess) and then clicked ON your name to see if there were any clues in your past posts (there was one... though just a mere 'hint').
Then I saw your other threads and saw that Seattle had been on your list, perhaps until somebody gave you a rather dumb response about Seattle.
SO firstly, here is the true, detailed weather for Seattle's airport that you can research yourself:
http://www.atmos.washington.edu/cgi-...ate.cgi?clisea
(and try to forget the fact that we just had 4 straight days of {what for us is} record heat ) (as that isn't my point)
I understand what you're feeling about the Maine coast, and I understand that your fiance is a Red Sox fan... but Boston is a mere 550 miles from Richmond, and you really could get there on a random, future vacation, and same with the Maine coast.
While I do love Quebec City... for its cuteness, its smallness, and its Frenchness ... it too isn't that far away from your future possibilities IF you are indeed IN Virginia (which could, of course, merely be your first name).
Seattle, though, is both far-away and special (from the perspective of Virginia)... and there are impressive mountain settings, and impressive water views all around.
Despite what somebody wrote here, June would be a good time to come, just before the major tourist rush begins, and well enough into the year that the weather is most typically fine.
As you could find on the link I offered above, the average high temp in Seattle on June 1 is 67... June 15 it is 70, and on June 30 it is 73 (remember, I told you to forget that it was 87 this year on June 30).
Humidity here is relatively insignificant when it's warm, and there is so much to see and do, that it would afford wonderful options for a honeymoon.
As for QC, I am trying to use an online map thing to find the "street view" of the area I really liked, but everything is in French (of course), and I have only my memory to guide me... I know where the walled city is, up high, and in the seeming 'corner' (with the river view)... and I know the big, famous hotel (which sits on the desk in front of me here, on a placemat) "Le Chateau Frontenac".
One part of the area I totally loved, were the small towns lining the St. Lawrence River, perhaps on either/any side of QC, and on either side of the river too. (the ones I saw were north of the river and west of QC) ... so picturesque, and so many towns had impressive churches, some of which seemed more elaborate than the surroundings might warrant. I was impressed, and I'm not even religious.
It is really fun to immerse yourself in the foreignness that is the French language/culture, which is far more evident in QC and surrounds than in a large, touristy place like Montreal.
I know it must be fun to contemplate your honeymoon, and I wonder if those so doing let their minds wander ahead 20 or 30 years and try to imagine what they want to see/remember while looking back in time at what they chose??
In some ways, you can't go wrong... (but I just wanted you to be fully informed while you're choosing)
Good luck with it all!!

I can't thank you all enough for the helpful advice!
NorthwestMale, I am, in fact, from Virginia and will be coming from there when we leave on our honeymoon. I am just currently in the SF area for an internship for school
You've definitely given me some more things to think about, and another member has given me the same review of Seattle as you. She, too, suggested that Seattle has very nice weather that time of year and would be fun for a honeymoon. That being said, let me mention a few things we have looked at. Right now, we are most excited about these two possibilities because they are both something new and different for us. I've seen a lot of the Southwest, and although I think it's beautiful and can't wait to return, we want a new adventure for our honeymoon. We are also preparing for a road trip in a few weeks that will take us home to VA from CA that will include Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands, which puts Yellowstone and Grand Tetons further down on my list as well (I'm sure you saw that we were considering that area as well).
So, for Seattle, here was my potential (and very rough) itinerary, assuming we would honeymoon from Sunday, June 5 - Tuesday, June 14. Please make comments/suggestions as you wish (although I know this is the Canada forum):
Days 1-3: explore Seattle and go on a whale watching cruise
Day 4: Mt. Rainier - stay in park (Paradise area)
Days 5-6: explore Kalaloch Beach/Lake Quinault area and Hoh Rainforest (staying at Kalaloch Beach Cabins)
Day 7: head to Port Angeles with stops along the beach around La Push/Mora for tide pooling (staying in Port Angeles)
Days 8-9: explore Sol Duc Hot Springs and Lake Crescent areas, also Hurricane Ridge, head back to Seattle Day 9 evening
Day 10: fly home
Seattle interests include: Chihuly Gardens, Space Needle, Museum of Flight, Pike Place Market, whale watching cruise, wandering in the city
We were very interested in staying at Treehouse Point, and thought about staying there while exploring Seattle (except the nights of our arrival and departure). Mapquest estimates about 30 minutes to Seattle from there.
I will say part of the reason we are leaning towards the Northeast though is because it will be much cheaper for flights, and rental car use would be minimum, so again cutting down on price. But, we do have a lot of other things to look at and consider as well and want to make an informed decision so we don't regret it. Both areas are so very interesting to us for different reasons.
I haven't had the opportunity to really sit down and discuss things (other than phone conversations) with my fiancé (he's been at home in VA while I've been in CA for the past 3 months!), but as I mentioned we are preparing for our cross country road trip home at the end of July, so we will have PLENTY of time to discuss everything then while we are driving I just thought it would be most helpful to have as much information as I could beforehand.
For anyone else who may have comments or suggestions regarding the Northeast potential itinerary, this is what I have come up with (assuming the same dates):
Days 1-2: Fly to Boston, catch a Red Sox game, explore the history on the Freedom Trail and at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, sunset harbor cruise (stay in Boston)
Day 3: morning at New England Aquarium, drive up the coast to Kennebunkport with stops along the way (Salem? Marblehead? Gloucester? Ipswich? The 1634 Meadery in Ipswich caught my eye while looking) (stay in Kennebunkport)
Days 4-6: spend in Kennebunkport. Options include lobster tour, sailing trip on Eleanor Schooner, kayaking/canoeing, visiting the downtown area, relaxing, seeing the beaches, trolley tour, local lighthouses, Tree Spa, The Clam Shack (stay in Kennebunkport)
Day 7: head to Portland to fly to QC, evening in QC (stay in QC)
Days 8-9: explore Old QC and Ile d'Orleans/Montmorency Falls (stay in QC)
Day 10: Fly home
Comments and suggestions on either itinerary are welcomed and appreciated!

We liked Seattle, too, and we stayed at the Market Inn right near Pike Place Market. If you do stay there, get a room on the waterside. We were on a budget and saved a little by staying on the city side and the room was fine, but the water side ones are nicer.
If either of you is interested in aircraft, the Boeing tour was fun. This was fun too:

Whatever you do, I hope you'll write a trip report!

Thanks for the recommendations goddesstogo! I had seen the Teatro Zinzanni while researching and forgotten about it, so I appreciate you bringing it back to my attention as it does look like something we would be interested in. We are interested in aircraft, so I will be sure to check out the Boeing tour as well.
I will be sure to write a trip report as you all have been so incredibly helpful on this forum!
Once we decide on our LOCATION I'll post a more detailed itinerary for comments and suggestions, but for now feel free to continue to try to sway me one way or the other

I think you should really paste the Seattle-related stuff into a new thread here at Fodors, so that many others can find it in order to critique.
To my knowledge, everything in your would-be Seattle plan makes good sense... though I'm inclined to feel that it represents a lot of moving around for a honeymoon.
With regard to rental car pricing, be sure to fly into SeaTac and then take the Link Light Rail into downtown Seattle (simple to do) where you'd stay a night or two without a rental car, and then pick-up the rental downtown, before dropping it in the same, downtown location (a week? - or whatever) later and then returning to the airport via the light rail.
This will save tons in airport taxes and fees!

Hello!
After much debate and research, we have decided that we want to do coastal Maine (Kennebunkport) and Quebec City. We have decided to save Boston for another time when we can spend more time there since it is closer to us.
The plan will be to split the week between the two places, and to fly from one place to the other via Portland airport. We will fly from home on a Sunday and likely return the following Sunday as well.
I'm looking for suggestions of places to stay and and things not to miss. I do have a list from my research but want advice from those who have been there. Budget would likely be no more than ~$200/night for rooms. I'm especially looking for some advice regarding Quebec City. I am having difficulty figuring out where things are in the walled city and outside it, and general distances between places based on the little bit of research I have done. I'll also post in the US forum for advice on Maine!
Our interests include historical sightseeing, nature, wildlife, and possibly museums. We are also interested in trying some different/unique foods. Any other suggestions for unique experiences are also welcome! Thanks in advance!

Hi again, Virginia.
The hotel we stayed at in Quebec City (where they brought the picnic basket of breakfast to our room) was this:

It's about a 10-minute interesting walk to the main part of Old Town and across the road from the market. We got a special rate of $109/night but that was in 2009 so it's surely over that now but might still be within or close to your budget. It still gets good reviews.
