Things to do in Charlotte Town

Going to be in Charlottetown late May. Is rental car a necessity? What are some of the must see? We are looking at booking into the Delta or Holman Grand. Are they walking distance to everywhere downtown? Are there hop-on hop-off buses that takes you around town or the island? Are cab fare reasonable and easy to get a cab? What are some of the do not miss restaurants (or pub)? Any info would be appreciated.

BTW, we are staying for about a week, I am attending meetings for 2 days so DW will be looking for things to do on her own for a couple of days and then we are free to roam around for the rest of the week. We have not been to Charlottetown since the 70's so for all intend and purposes, you might as well say we've never been there.

Province House is a must-see because of its historical significance, especially given that 2014 is the sesquicentennial of the Charlottetown Conference of 1864.

A week is more than enough to see everything in Charlottetown. You might want to rent a car and go exploring. We enjoyed visiting Belfast Mini Mills (http://www.minimills.net), about half an hour from Charlottetown. They make machinery for processing fibers of various kinds (making yarns from raw wool/fur/etc., including many exotic animals and even cats and dogs). You will want a tour/demonstration of all of the equipment—it was quite fascinating! They take you through the entire process.

Going the other direction, we had fun at the Bottle Houses in Cap-Egmont (http://www.bottlehouses.com) and at North Cape (http://www.northcape.ca), including watching several men harvesting Irish Moss.

Check out http://www.discovercharlottetown.com and http://www.tourismpei.com to see what will be happening while you are there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I heard there are all kinds of festivals going on this year as it is the 150 year anniversary.

Everyone talks about Anne of Green Gables, is it worth a special visit or we should take it in as part of the National Park? We will miss the Anne of Green Gables musical as it doesn't start up till July.

We planned to stop in Founders' Hall, Victoria Park, St. Dunstan's Basilica, Province House and the National Park if we are renting a car.

Any other suggestions?

Hi eschew,

When I went to Charlottetown back in June 2010, I didn't rent a car, but a friend and I transported our bikes there via VIA Rail and Acadian Bus Lines from Montreal. Charlottetown itself is quite compact and there's a nice variety of restaurants accessible within its heart, of which I'd recommend Water Prince Corner Shop for its unpretentious, friendly Maritime ambience. Many restaurants, Province House, St. Dunstan's Basilica and Victoria Park are within easy walking distance of your hotel choices. There's very little public transportation-wise; our B&B hostess told us that city buses were only introduced a few years back. I don't remember seeing a HOHO-style bus and would be surprised if there were one, especially in May, which is still a quiet season for PEI.

There was one Charlottetown-Cavendish shuttle bus daily that left from Founder's Hall at 9:15 am and dropped one off at the Tourist Information Center about a 5 minute walk from Anne of Green Gables House (return was 5:15pm, I recollect). Across the street from the tourist information center in Cavendish, there was a Petro Canada where my friend & I rented bikes to cycle along the gorgeous nearby shores with the red cliffs.

If you're interested in renting a bike, I thought the cycling in the Charlottetown and Cavendish area was pretty fantastic (the Confederation Trail was a remarkable bike path for such a small place as PEI).

All this said, I think most visitors would be happiest renting a car.

Enjoy! Daniel

Thanks Daniel! I will definitely look into the Charlottetown-Cavendish shuttle. Unless they have a bicycle for 2, we probably won't be rising as DW is not a confident rider.
