Theater Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada

Friends and I will be in Stratford at the end of August, and would like to see some of the theater offerings while there. Does one have to purchase tickets ahead of time? Or can we wait until we are there?

Chancey. The shows do sell out fairly often, especially the best shows(e.g. those featuring well-known actors). And the summer months are of course the busiest.

However, they don't always sell out. No way to be sure. There are sometimes last minute cancellations - their website will tell you how to check for these. Also - you might want to search their website to sign up for their "Last Minute Deals" Club - they will email you a week or 2 before if they have shows with a lot of unsold seats. We've gotten some great deals this way in past, but not every year.

So, if there are specific shows and times that you really want to see, it's probably best to book well ahead.

Whenever we go, we purchase our tickets ahead of time. We often will hit a matinee and an evening performance on the same day. If we've purchased our tickets beforehand, it makes it much easier to plan for dinner reservations, etc. (which, by the way, I would recommend you make in advance!)

I always recommend purchasing tickets for the shows you really want to see and see if there are others you'd like to see while here. We also provide discounts on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/StratfordFestival) or on twitter - we are posting an offer this Sunday for one of our productions (only available for 24 hours). You can also ask questions there for more information about Stratford and the Festival.

And note that August is probably the peak month for visitors to Stratford. We've been running a B&B in Stratford for a couple of years - a new one where we didn't inherit return guests from previous owners - and in August 2010 we were fully booked the entire month.
