Sydney accomodation (pre-ferry)

WE are travelling to Newfoundland via ferry from Sydney (Cape Breton, NS.) Any expereince with accomadaion out there, the ferry leaves at 6am and we have to be there an hour or so earlier so distance is imperative but we were hoping to arrive a day or tow earlier and see the sights of Cape Breton first. Also any restaurant info would be useful...

I just checked the tourism sites to see if I could give you websites and they make it look as if there is no lodging in North Sydney. The ferry leaves from North Sydney which can be about 45 minutes away. I found phone numbers for a couple. I have never stayed in any of these but have seen them from the outside:
BW North Star Inn (would be my first/only choice): 902-794-8581
Clansman Motel: 902-794-7226
Highland Motel: 902-794-4530

If you don't mind driving from Sydney, There are many more choices there. Go to this website and choose Hotels/Motels for Sydney. I would recommend the Cambrige Suites.

Good luck and have a great trip.

Hi, LJ! We just returned from Newfoundland (our second trip) -- fantastic place, you'll love it!!1

We always stay at the Delta Sydney when traveling to NF by ferry. It's in Sydney, not North Sydney. Actually, as Bluenoser discovered, you can't really stay by the ferry (nor would you want to; it's in its own special area that's rather industrial). Most people we've seen/met stay in Sydney. Yes, you do need to allow a bit of extra time to get to the ferry, but it's not bad at all. The hotel staff can advise on how much time to allow -- probably 20 mins. You pick up the highway on the edge of town and go for a few exits. (Do NOT get off at the "North Sydney" exit; there's a special ferry exit, with plenty of signs!)

Delta Sydney is a lovely hotel, with views of the harbor, friendly staff, and great breakfasts. There's also a big waterslide in the pool, which we love.

Also -- do double-check the time of your ferry! Ours left at 8 a.m. Where are you sailing to, Port Aux Basques or Argentia?

Susan, we are going directly into Argentia as, for me, this is not a holiday...I am on duty a couple of days afer arrival so we wanted to save time on the move (we will be posted in St. John's for 8 months). Thanks for tip about Delta...I will be booking us in there as soon as I can tear myself away from this addictive website!
