Sutton Place Hotel is NOT a 5 star Hotel...

HI..
Visited Vancouver and we stayed at Sutton Place..all the ratings come in at 5 star and I must say that this is the biggest mispresentation of a so called Luxury Hotel that I have ever seen in all my travels throughout the world..the service was quite lovely but the rooms were so tired and the beds and the linens were horrific..this is more on the scale of a 3 star..don't always believe the star rating even though the stars stay there but that is in a seperate wing of the hotel where I am sure it is considered Luxury...

I couldn't agree more!=D>

The place has seen better days and has long been living off it's reputation.

You might think of putting something on Trip Adviser about the place.

I only attend meetings/never stay there but once past the lobby the shabbiness begins.

Hi Marko..
Gerards the bar/lounge is outstanding with the gorgeous wood paneling ..the food and drink were excellent but pricey. I did not do the Fleuri restaurant but looked busy.
It's just the rooms that blow..
Ask for something on the top floor or close to it..have fun.

Hi Marko..
I booked through Expedia and I just got a call from the VP that stated the room should of never been released and is compensating the cost of our room but what I have to wonder is booking through a third party discriminate one for getting the better room if you booked direct?
The views are nice the higher you go and do not settle for anything less!

"ut what I have to wonder is booking through a third party discriminate one for getting the better room if you booked direct?"

I think that's the case for many top hotels. I've heard several stories where, if you book through a 3rd party (especially when the prices are much reduced), the hotel will generally place you in the most basic of basic rooms. If you want a better room, they'll generally charge you a lot more for it.

I see this constantly now - the internet has driven prices way down on many things including hotels - they have had to adjust somehow and they have - you get less if you paid less in many cases. Humans on the other hand, somehow believe that they can magically get 1st class for 3rd class prices & they are SOOO indignant if they do not get a $100 product for $10. I sell something that I used to give 1st class svc on all the time - then people just stopped buy it. I lowered the price way down and they buy again - but I give less service and do they howl. Do you people actually believe that companies can sell at a loss and survive? or offer a luxury product for budget prices? Do you all live in ding dong land? and, should I earn less than a modest living so that you can have a deal? Drive up in your new SUV in Prada & demand no taxes & below-wholesale prices? Wake up.

Hi all,

I have to disagree with merckxxx as to what third party bookings are supposed to be about. Hotels make deals with third party sellers like Expedia to fill rooms that would not be filled otherwise. Expedia's deal with the hotel is that their customers will be treated the same as the person that booked through the hotel. Instead of the room sitting empty, the hotel makes some money. They only release a certain number of rooms that they know would be empty if not for the third party wholesaler.

It's not right that the hotel would treat Expedia guests any different than a direct booking guest. Look at Tahiti's case. The VP said those rooms were not even supposed to be released, yet they went ahead and gave her the substandard room when her agreement with Expedia was for a 5-star Sutton Place room. I use Expedia most of the time when I travel and have had very good results, but that is pretty shady on the part of Sutton Place.

A year (maybe more) ago, someone on Fodor's posted a link to an article on this very subject.

An anonymous hotel employee was dishing the dirt on how they feel (and treat) customers who book through discount sites.

It seems that where this person works, they even have staff meetings on it. - It was stated for a fact that the discount buyer is NOT getting the same service as one who booked through them. Little room extras may be withheld (like the complimentary fruit basket etc.) or you may end up in a room that isn't as nice as one might expect (ksucat was correct about a hotel reserving rooms ... but what rooms do you think they are going to reserve?!)

I am not saying I think this is right or not, I just wanted to let people know that in at least one hotel, it is happening.

merckxxx..
The only person who lives in ding dong land is you..sad to say..
I payed for a 5* hotel..I received a room that was best a 3*, what is it that you don't get..I paid the price for a 5* and I complained to management and they stated that the room I received was not to be released because it was undergoing a very needed upgrade.
I felt I was discriminated by Sutton Place because I did book through Expedia.
I am sorry that you are a jaded 62 year old who seems to really like to stir the pot on previous posts..if you had something to say that made any sense, I would respect you alot more!

Wow, that's surprising to me. I stay at the Sutton Place at least 1 or 2 times a year and have since the days when it was the Meridian back in the late 80s. My most recent stay was last Thanksgiving in a standard room on a mid-level floor, not a deluxe room (the ones on the top couple of floors), and I'm going again for a couple days in December. I've always found it to be a lovely experience. No, the rooms don't have all the bells and whistles of newer hotels, and they are on the small side, but IMO they are elegant and comfortable. I've never experienced shabby linens or anything remotely like that. I've stayed in just about all the nice hotels in Vancouver, but keep coming back to the Sutton Place because they offer the best combination of value, location and service, IMO.

I guess it is somewhat luck of the draw though. It's good to know the hotel did the right thing and acknowledged their mistake.

I have heard it's pretty common for hotels to give their most basic rooms to guests who book through Expedia and I don't think that's a bad thing--if you want to save money, of course there's going to be a tradeoff. I wouldn't expect to get the best room of that room type if I've booked at a discount. But it sounds like that wasn't what happened here--they shouldn't have given you that room, period, regardless of how you booked your room, and they acknowledged that.
