Surrey vs. Vancouver

After a Rockies and Whistler itinerary, we have a couple nights in Vancouver. Surrey is priced considerably less, but is it worth the distance? Can't tell how far it is from Vancouver attratctions, like Stanley Park and Capilano. We would save about $120 a night x 2. Thanks

No you don't want Surrey. It is a long way from the city and its priced less for a reason. If money is a big factor and you wanted to stay there (I don't recommend that) you can get the Sky Train (LRT) in to the city. I think you should try to get a hotel in the city - give Priceline a try.

Surrey is certainly not much of a destination but it's not SO bad; it's mostly just bland suburbs. To be fair, it's the suburb that locals refer to by name when making jokes about the worst of suburbia and while you might not want to stay there, I'm not sure that staying there would be any worse than staying in any other suburban area.

If I were you I would get a hotel in the city simply so you can experience more of it and not have take the clean and safe LRT back to your hotel at night. Station to station will take about 45 minutes, and you will probably have travel times on either end of your journey.

If you do think the savings is worth it, and you wish to stay in Surrey or any other suburb, you might want to make sure that getting to the Skytrain (LRT will be easy). It could well be the case that you'd have a lengthy bus ride before getting on the LRT and in a worst case scenario, the hotel itself might not be on a public transit route. Stay downtown and the time and effort won't be an issue.

If you want to save $$ on a hotel room, why not stay over in North Vancouver close to Londsdale Quay - where you can take the seabus over to downtown?

http://www.lonsdalequayhotel.bc.ca/

Rates are pretty reasonable, nice location, and great view of the city.

Please don't stay in Surrey....it is not the same - by any stretch. Skytrain is, overall, considered safe, but the "local population" that rides it can be intimidating at best sometimes (and this from someone who rides it once a week or so).

Don't even think about staying in Surrey and driving "in to town" every day....traffic can be crazy, even on the weekends.

Now, there are parts of Surrey that are nice..close to White Rock, etc., but those are so far out (an hours drive from downtown Vancouver) that it just isn't worth the $$ savings.

If you need help finding a hotel downtown let us know...if you let us know your budget and dates we might be able to help!

thanks so much! We may just have to spend the extra money. Not a huge deal, but it's not the best year to trave to Canada, gas is high, the US dollar is low! We will have just come from Banff, Japser and Whistler. I've never used Priceline, but maybe we'll give it a try-thanks again!

Well, if you've spent a wonderful holiday in Banff, Jasper and Whistler...please don't end it in Surrey! All of those places are higher in price (restaurants, etc.) then Vancouver. Let us know if you need any help with Priceline and hotel recommendations.

Are you serious? What on earth is so intimidating about the "local population" in Surrey. The last time I was in the Vancouver area (with my husband who was there on business) (about two years ago) I took the Skytrain into downtown Vancouver from Coquitlam every day for a week and never felt "intimidated" by ANYONE. But then ordinary people on their way to work and school don't "intimidate" me. <really shaking my head in amazment that anyone would be "intimidated".

BTW my husband's cousin lived in Surrey at the time and I will have to tell her that she was an "intimidating local" - since she used the Skytrain regularly.

However back to poster's original questions - as a tourist unless money is really a major concern (In which case Surrey is OK - just further out and therefore it will take longer to get to attractions. If you decide on Surrey - to cut down on commute time just make sure you are very close to a Skytrain station. In Coquitlam, I was a 5 minute walk away - very convenient) you would probably be better off closer to downtown Vancouver for the sake of convenience.
