Hi Mooninjuly, I suggest you change your itinerary. If you want to see Gros Morne I suggest you fly into Deer Lake (YDF). If you are already committed to flying into St. John's, I suggest you stay on the East Coast. You only have a week and I hate to see you lose two days driving across the island. There are lots of hiking opportunities on the east coast. Google the East Coast Trail. I think their web site may be ect.org but I am not sure. Also look at the Avalon Pennisula and Bonavista Pennisula.
I agree with katrinasl. Unless you fly in and out of Deer Lake, you don't really have enough time for Gros Morne. It's a long and not terribly scenic drive from St. John's to Gros Morne.
There is plenty to see and do in the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas--in fact you can only scratch the surface there as well. You might also want to investigate Terra Nova National Park.
