I will be flying into St. John's Newfoundland this summer. Will have about 5 days to tour. I figure about 2 days in St. John's itself but what about the restof the time. Has anyone been to the little French Islands off the coast of Newfoundland, St. Pierre and Miquelon. Is this a day trip from St. John's? How far is the distance? I will have a car. Any suggestions on what else to do or place to stay in the area? Thanks in advance.

I just returned from a visit to St John's and environs. Assuming you will have a car you can drive all around the Avalon Penisula using St. J. as a base and fill in 2-3 days.Go out along the maine Drvie. Get hold of the Johnon Family Foundation City Walk map and walk in the town, it is fascinating esp. the Battery-Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi area. Outside St' J is very beautiful esp. Conception Bay area. You should also go to Cape Spear, the eastenrmost point in NA, a very pictureesque lighthouse. Eat at Jangos (sp?), Auntie Craes and the Classic Cafe while in St. J. St Pierre and Miquelon are not a day trip by any means unless you are flying and if you do have extra time I'd advise skipping St Pierre in favour of a trip to Gros Morne Park which is truly spectacular.
Pippin: Been to St Pierre and Miquelon twice, but quite a few years ago. Doubt that it is changed all that much. It is more than a day trip, if you are planning to return on the same day. One day there, one day back, and two or three days there would work fine. Main attraction is that this is really Europe, and yet so close to North America. Food is definitely French cuisine. Town looks European. I really enjoyed because of its uniqueness. Only other places in North America that come close to the atmosphere are Quebec City, Old Montreal, and maybe Historic Quarter of New Orleans. Bon Voyage!!
