St. John's Newfoundland - Delta
I am supposed to be in St. John's for a conference the end of September beginning of October 1999 for approximately 5 days. I won't have much free time but can anyone let me know what not to miss out on while in St. John's? eg: restaurants, bars, and sites not to be missed?

Thanks!!

Hello Lynne, See Signal Hill which over looks the city and the harbor, incredable views and nice walking trails. Also Cape Spear(half hour) the most easterly place in North America, it has a pretty lighthouse, but I don't think you'll find it open to go inside at that time of year, but I could be wrong. Any way the views are great. Downtown on George St. you will find lots of pubs and bars.
Thanks very much for the suggestions. Does anyone else have any ideas? I'm particularly interested in recommended restaurants and clubs that would be nearby.
Hi Lynne, we stayed at the Delta for one week a couple of summers ago and it was very good...as for names of restaurants you will notice that St. John<s is not very big so just take a walk and you will discover neat places to eat fairly easily. Once you get there the local people will be happy to direct you have a nice vi

Just got back...had a WONDERFUL time!
If you've never been to Newfoundland you MUST go!
For anyone else staying in St. John's:
K Cafe across the street from the Delta was excellent also owned by them Granite Rock - also excellent. Classic Cafe (there are 3), and Fireside Cafe (very inexpensive) good choices.
Bars - we loved George St. especially O'Reillys. Was lucky enough to go to Johnny Burke's and see the Barra McNeils and Great Big Sea - wonderful - for $12!!!!
I love St. John's and look forward to returning someday to see more of Newfoundland. VERY friendly people!
Email me directly if you need any other info.
My only disappointment...they need to learn how to run better tours - they take you great places (Signal Hill and Cape Spear but they don't do much talking about it...personally I think there would be money to be made but giving a bit of history or details about the place! I had done some reading before I went but I'm sorry they weren't better at explaining the history, politics, and local lore.
