I don't know how you managed with all those crowds!

The scenery is almost unbelievably beautiful. What's more, the colour of those lakes is such a gorgeous blue! Thanks for sharing!

mms, you will get a star in my trip report for the Baker Creek suggestion. It was ideal for us!!!!
Daniel, the crowds were pretty bad at lakeside, but twenty yards up a steep hill thinned them out. Still it was sad to see how much more built up and developed it is than twenty years ago when I made my first hikes there. Progress....

Did you ever locate convenient laundry facilities around Lake Louise? I hesitated to recommend the restaurant at Baker Creek Chalets, because ownership of the dining room has changed. Did you try it, and if so, how was it?

We did not find convenient laundry facilities. I am glad we were forwarned and chose our clothing accordingly. There is no place in the cabin to hang wet clothing.
We went to Baker Creek Bistro for dinner one night. The meals ranged from excellent (my halibut, lucky me!) to horrible (perogies). Service was very slow (over 2.5 hours) and they were not busy. The room was kept at tropical temps which made two of my group very uncomfortable. We had made a reservation for another night, but cancelled it.
One night we were fairly late coming in from our hike and we ordered pizza from the Bistro Back Door. We had three pizzas and they were excellent.

Thanks for sharing your photos--love this area--and you got up to Lake O'Hara. Looking forward to your trip report.

So sad to hear that about Baker Creek Bistro, at one time it was excellent. We'll be back in the first week of October but are staying timeshare at Banff Rocky Mountain Resort. Loved your pictures!

What a beautiful place. Our Canadian DIL has helped plan a trip to Alberta for us early October. Fly to Vancouver, take the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff, stay for a week with day trips to lots of places.

Your pictures were beautiful. When does the trip report appear?

I will try to post something in a day or two. I have already reviewed Baker Creek Chalets and most of the restaurants on Trip Advisor (same screenname). Our primary activity was hiking with wildlife viewing a close second. This area is perfect for both. I would love to see it in late fall. You must post some photos from your trip, Cheryl.

Linda, getting to Lake O'Hara took a great deal of effort and patience. I appreciate that they are keeping a special area special, but boy, it is hard to get in there!

cmcfong, thanks for sharing! When were you there? I just got back last Wednesday - wouldn't it be funny if we were there the same time? Looks like you had a nice sunny day to see Peyto Lake, though. We tried twice and hit heavy clouds both times. Still gorgeous, though.

jent, we were at Peyto Lake on August 10. The day was iffy, in and out of clouds and rain, but we caught some clear spots.

rivet, you get a gold star for your directions on the Trans Can, we found everything. And we found the Diner Deluxe, my new favorite restaurant. They have absolutely fabulous homemade ice cream (the raspberry milkshake is permanently fixed in my brain). One thing we did botch was trying to see the little Western town outside of Calgary. Since we had pretty steady rain on our last day we decided to go there on our way back, we must not have found the center. We drove around for a while but all we saw were a couple of small strip malls. Next time!

Kodi, I have you and my friend, Paul, to thank for putting Newfoundland on the target list. I am still trying to convince DH.

Hey Cmcfong,

My comment "I don't know how you managed with all those crowds!" was meant tongue-in-cheek since I didn't see people at all in a lot of those pictures, so I was imagining you just enjoying those majestic views alone with your travelling companions. Somewhat reluctantly I'll concede that it's good that others are experiencing the Canadian Rockies, but I not so secretly sometimes like to be one of a few (or even more selfishly the only one) appreciating the aesthetics of a beautiful spot at a given moment.

However in a way, I'd think it would be even better that the tranquil thinned out spots though were from up high, from which I imagine you'd get more of a panorama!

Anyhow, your trip inspires me to go back, as I've only seen Jasper and the Canadian Rockies that surround the VIA Rail tracks on the Edmonton-Vancouver stretch. While gorgeous, your photos depict landscapes I didn't see on that train route.

Best wishes, Daniel

It was my good fortune to hike in these areas fifteen or twenty years ago and enjoy almost total solitude on the trails. Now there are busloads of people in the parking areas of virtually every turnout or attraction. I am ambivalent about it, because as you note there is a real plus to it being accessible to everyone irrespective of physical limitations. BUT....the downside is we are loving it to death. We were relatively "alone" when we got twenty or so minutes on the trails most days. But there were days, like the day we hiked to Plain of Six Glaciers and Lake Agnes teahouses....ohmigosh, there were lines at some trail points!
Daniel, I hope you will visit the area. I love seeing places even places I have been through your eyes. You are a great storyteller.

Wonderful photos! Thanks for sharing. I'm heading up there next month and can't wait.

I only hope the crowds you describe have dissipated a bit by then.
