Shaw Festival , Niagara-On-The-Lake

I recently viewed a special on PBS about The theatre productions started by George Bernard Shaw. It sounds like a fantastic place to visit. Can anyone recommend a good place to stay in the immediate area that is not overly expensive? My wife and I are considering a three to four night stay. Also I understand there are some nice wineries in that area. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Pricing for accomodations during the Summer can be very pricy and the area is swamped with families and spilling over from the nearby Falls... the Good News is that the Festival runs into November and that the crowds decrease somewhat after school starts...

There are four main types of accomodation... the Hotel group includes www.vintage-inns.com with three main properties in the village that cover a range of styles and price...

try www.niagarasfinest.com for the boutique category... smaller and a bit more quaint, these are favorites with visitors...

Many choose to stay in the dozens of converted homes and cottages in the B&B Category... you can research through www.niagarabedandbreakfasts.com

finally, within minutes of the village are the typical hotel/motel Niagara accomodations... you will miss the quaint village and need to drive a bit, but the prices can be lower...

If you are flexible in planning, mid-september and early week offer more rooms at better prices with the same activity...

There are over 100 wineries in the Niagara Region, many with restaurants and all with tasting schedules... once the trees begin to change, the area booms on weekends again until the snow begins...

just a start, but have a look at the above and you can fine tune later...

And on Wednesday evenings until mid September there is a fun "Supper" Market .... gourmet food trucks/music/etc

The 'Niagara Wine Trail' site is for wineries on the U.S. side, not Niagara on the Lake.

This site also has lots of information on all of Ontario's wine regions. http://winecountryontario.ca/

We recently stayed 3 nights in NOTL at Newark Bed and Breakfast - it was wonderful... I highly recommend their place. Lou is an expert on the wineries. We toured Peller Estates ( my favorite - they took us out to the vineyard, cellar, and explained the glass sizes ). There are so many wineries to visit - I recommend taking along snacks... there weren't too many that offered snacks and it really should be offered. There was one that we visited that had a country store and restaurant.. and in their deli, a small container of cheese was $ 24.95... they also had a pizza oven in the back, which we went to and were totally ignored.. so no wine was purchased there.

"not overly expensive" is meaningless bogey. You might get some more specific suggestions of places to stay if you gave an actual price range. There is no point in someone suggesting a place at $200 per night, which they consider 'not overly expensive', if your budget is $100 per night.

Frugal, if you are from the USA then you may not realize that cheese in Canada is always more expensive than in the USA.

Coming from Europe, my wife can't believe how much it costs for cheese compared to Europe.

if youre touring around the wineries near Niagara on the Lake and want a lunch to take I suggest The Pie Plate in Virgil (which is really part of Niagara on the Lake) Great pizzas and sandwiches to go. Or you can eat on there sweet porch or if you feel like a good beer with your lunch to switch things up there is a great microbrewery directly across the street called Silversmiths. It has a great ambience and they will order food from The Pie Plate for you.

There is some great stuff happening at the Shaw this year. Definitely worth the visit.

It's a wonderful place to visit - for the wine, theatre, fruit and pretty and peaceful ambience. That's all I can add to the already great information you've been given above by everyone.
Have a great time !
