I've been meaning to ask this question, and reading one of Judy's notes in another post has prompted it, finally. We've had some bad experiences with auto break-ins in some European cities and some Caribbean towns. (Oddly, never in the U.S., though by no stretch of the imagination do I think of our cities and towns here as crime-free.)
For many of our hikes, our luggage, etc. will be in the hotel room, but we're hoping to do others on the way to destinations, e.g. Icefields stops on the way from Lake Louise to Jasper; other trails coming back from jasper to Emerald Lake, etc.
I'd appreciate in-put on this subject-- and I suppose also on safety in general. (We're well-travelled, so we don't need reminders of the "regular and usual" attentions, but if there are others, it'd be great to hear about them.)
Thanks very very much.
Safe to leave stuff in car and go on hikes in Rockies?

Hello poss,
I always used to think the Canadian Rockies were very safe. We used to think nothing of leaving cameras and other valuables in our car, albeit we did lock our car.
However, a couple of weekends ago a Calgary colleague of mine had stuff stolen from her locked car that was parked just off the Icefields Parkway. That has made me re-think the state in which I'll leave my own parked car in the Rockies in future.
I would say it would be best to keep luggage in the locked trunk. Even before the incident involving my colleague, I would have carried my passport with me if I was a foreign visitor hiking on a day on which I was transferring accommodation. Of course when it comes to the Canadian Rockies, that's a hypothetical scenario for me, because I live here, and I don't take my passport to the mountains. But when I travel with my passport I either have it with me or leave it in a hotel safe.
What probably will change now that I've heard about the incident involving my colleague is that I will be more careful with camera equipment in the mountains. I will take my camera with me. Usually we have a camera with us when we hike so we can capture the scenery. But we might leave our camera in the car if we have lunch at a picnic table or at a restaurant in a mountain resort town. In future we'll probably bring our camera with us, even if we're leaving our car only to have lunch.
As Judy says anything of value should be locked out of sight in the trunk of your vehicle whiling you are hiking.
