Hi all - just signed on to this forum and have a question regarding weather expectations!

My wife and I are flying into Vancouver on 4 Sept for 3 nights - collect a hire car and over to the island for 3 nights then travel through Harrison Hot Springs (1 night), Princeton (1), Osoyoos (1), Kelowna (2), Revelstoke (1), Lake Louise (1), Jasper (2), Canmore (2) - then onto Calgary and fly onto Montreal where we stay with relations for 8 nights.

In terms of expected weather we have looked at this site - http://www.currentresults.com/Weathe...-september.php

and are a bit concerned about the low temperatures stated. We have previously been to Montreal and Mont Tremblant during Sept and experience temps in the mid 20's. I appreciate we will be much further west and at a higher elevation, but can anyone comment on the temps shown on this site, please.

We have planned and booked the entire road-trip ourselves, having first looked at the various train options and decided they were too expensive for their duration.

Well these are averages for the entire month of September (no information on the historical period is given). You will be there for the first half and generally the temperatures should be warmer than the averages shown. Bear in mind, however, that the weather, especially in the mountains, can be quite variable.

I suggest you look at Weather Underground where you can get a wealth of information--not only forecasts, but historical weather for the actual dates you will be in each location.

It is usually a beautiful time in the Rockies. Yes it may be crisp at times, but sunny, some foliage color, and generally dry. What do you plan to do?

It can really depend, but up in Lake Louise, especially, be prepared for chilly nights. Temps can range from around freezing up to 30c in a single day, but more likely to range up to 20c in September.

Last weekend in Canmore and Lake Louise, temperatures were 4c or colder at night, though it warmed up to around 20c by mid afternoon. Some of the mountains around Canmore also had 3-5cm of fresh snow on Friday night (rain down in Canmore). I experienced similar low temps in July around Jasper and snow on higher ground in late July.

I would have some layers, plus thin gloves/mitts and hat or hoody for mornings in Jasper, Lake Louise, Revelstoke and Canmore. It could be warm, but it could also be the first chill of fall/winter.

I remember the time we flew from Ontario, on a September 7, it was about 90 F. The pilot on the way out said that the high in Calgary was going to be 35 F. We stayed in Waterton Lakes Park that night, pitched our tent in 14" of snow. Even though the campground had an abundance of wildlife hanging aroung (big bucks, and Bighorn rams), the next night, we were in a hotel!
Point being, in September, you have to be ready for anything. In our favor, the weather warmed up quickly, and the snow was gone in a few days, except for higher elevations.
But all that snow on top of the mountains sure punched up the colors in our pictures, as did the golden larches and aspens. A great spot to visit, in any season!
