Rockies or Atlantic Canada?

Which would be the better choice for a trip? I'm primarily interested in cultural and historic sights as opposed to natural sights and I understand both destinations are a nature lovers paradise. I have been to BC (Victoria and Vancouver) and have travelled from Niagara - Toronto - Kingston - Ottawa - Montreal - Quebec City.

What the main differences between Atlantic Canada and the Rockies and which destination would you choose?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!
Big choice.... you really can't go wrong choosing either.
I live in Western Canada and have always wanted to travel to the Maritimes!! I think that would be a fabulous decision...

I think this is true of many Westerners that I know... we would love to travel to the East coast but the airfare within Canada is outrageous. Flights are non direct due to the length of the trip and flights can be upwards of $1000 return depending on travel dates. I am spending a few hundred more this fall and flying to Italy!
Speaking only for myself, we tend to spend the money and travel outside of Canada when we should be travelling within this vast country. (but did make it to Montreal last summer and loved it!)

The people in the Maritimes are so warm and friendly(many transplants in Western Canada!!) and the fresh lobster and seafood is amazing... it is so scenic and there are many historic sites in Atlantic Canada.
As a proud Canadian....I say you wont be dissapointed with either destination.

Sounds like you have seen a lot of Canada already and have seen a couple of our larger cities! Vancouver and Victoria are beautiful! as kids we took the train from Vancouver to Calgary through the Rocky Mountains and it was unforgettable. If you have never seen the Mountains.... they are breathtaking... through BC, Banff and Canmore and into bustling Calgary.
When were you thinking of travelling?

I am probably not even qualified to contemplate such options based on the criteria you have.

And I have to suggest that, for most, mere geography will dictate their preference.

With that said, I have been to both, but nature is what I find most memorable about either, so I can't reeeeeeally comment about the 'cultural' part too much.

(although people are always talking about various cultural events on Cape Breton - I'm just seldom listening with great interest)

Then there's the practical factor, and as the Maritimes aren't generally on the way to anywhere, it is less likely for most that they'll ever get back to the Maritimes than that they'll get over the Rockies (again).

I certainly endorse the nature in either spot, but I don't know how you should decide...

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to focus on the Rockies and I'll try to work out a schedule for next year that'll allow me to visit the Calgary Stampede too. Atlantic Canada is plan B if the Rockies don't work out.

Atlantic Canada FOR SURE! There is so much history here.

St. Johns, Newfoundland is the oldest city in North American, the Halifax Explosion was the greatest man made explosion before the atomic bomb, Halifax's Pier 21 which was a gateway to Canada is the last standing immigration shed in Canada, the Halifax Citadel, which is a massive star-shaped fort in the center of Halifax. The list goes on and on! You can see and tour all of these places today!

If you want history, come to Atlantic Canada!

"I'm primarily interested in cultural and historic sights as opposed to natural sights and I understand both destinations are a nature lovers paradise."

I know you've decided on the Rockies, but this sentence of yours would have lead me to unequivocally choose Atlantic Canada for you. Atlantic Canada was explored much earlier than the Rockies (by Europeans and sad, but true, it is largely what were originally European-led settlements that remain north of the Rio Grande) and consequently has far more historic sights. Atlantic Canada to me feels more different culturally (examples: ceilidhs in PEI, Acadian French heard in Moncton, kilted bagpipers at the Citadel in Halifax, the Nova Scotian accent heard off the beaten path) from North America than the Rockies, thanks in part to the centuries-old history of continuous settlement.

I'm sure you'll have a great time in the Rockies if you go, but know that nature is the big draw there, more than historic sights or cultural sights.
