renting a car in Victoria
We would like a car in Victoria. Is it best to rent one in Vancouver and ferry it over or shall we wait to get to Victoria? I am concerned about being dropped at the ferry port in Victoria and standing there with luggage trying to figure out how to rent a car.

Hello betrhein,
Not knowing the overall context of your trip, I'm not in a position to suggest what would be the best time and place to pick up your rental car.
However, if you use Pacific Coach Lines to get across to Vancouver Island, the bus will pick you up in downtown Vancouver, take you across on the ferry, and then drop you off in downtown Victoria. Here is Pacific Coach Lines' website:

One of their drop off points is the corner of Douglas Street and Yates Street in Victoria. That is 3 blocks from Avis's downtown Victoria location at the corner of Douglas and Broughton Streets, to quote just one car rental company as an example.
Here's a map of downtown Victoria:

Hope that helps.

Depending on when you are travelling, you may be better to walk on the ferry than take a car. Weekends can be busy.
You may want to check out the cost of a flight over to Victoria as well and picking up a car at the airport.
And don't forget, you if rent a car in Vancouver, you will have to take it back to that depot or be penalized with a large drop-off fee.

I don't know if one can even rent a car at the ferry terminal. You can take the bus from Vancouver as Judy says or even buy a ticket onboard the ferry (during the first half hour or so of the trip) to take the bus into town. There is a car rental place nearly across the street from the bus terminal in Victoria.

There are no car rentals available at Swartz Bay - you would pretty much have to take a bus or taxi somewhere unless you have arranged for the car rental company to pick you up. Maybe some of them do that. The best bet, as others have suggested, is to take the Pacific Coach Lines bus into downtown Victoria and walk a couple of blocks up to the Avis office. There are hotels in that area that may have car rental desks for other companies as well.
