My friend and I are visiting Newfoundland Aug. 22-28 and plan to spend it in Avalon region. We're looking for a small, private cottage/cabin with kitchen that we could use as a centrally located base for day hikes (along East Coast Trail) and exploration of nearby towns. Nothing above $600 or so a week. Prefer an ocean view and not more than 90 minutes from St. John's. Also a short drive from restaurants! Appreciate all suggestions, including a list of "must-do" hikes.

We really enjoyed our stay at Willow HOuse In Mobile, not too far south of Witless Bay.

It's a typical 'salt box' Newfoundland House that's been restored.
ALthough it isn't right on the water, it's literally a 2 minute walk to the East Coast Trail and beautiful ocean views. Tor , the owner lives up the hill and was a big help and so friendly. The night we arrived, we asked him where we could get a map of the East Coast Trail. The next morning, it was at our front door when we woke up.
Actually the walk from the cottage was one of our favourites.
We walked south on the trail to Tinker Point or maybe it was to Tors Cove.
We did not do any really long hikes.
Our very favourite hike was the La Manche hike where the abandoned settlement ruins are and the big suspension bridge across the inlet , for the hikers. Don't miss this hike!
Thanks Kodi for your suggestions. Willow House sounds nice but just a wee bit above our price range. Plus, since we're just 2 people, we don't need 2 extra bedrooms! The location, though, sounds like it would suit our needs.
I will definitely check out the La Manche hike!
Jeng, so sorry it's a bit too much. The location is great. We were only 2 people too, but didin't feel the place was too big for us.... and the location was good.
I hope you find something suitable. I'm sure you will enjoy the East Coast Trail.. They have a good website.
Enjoy!!
