Questions about Nova Scotia itinerary

Hello,
I posted previously but have a more questions. I made our reservations on the CAT ferry from Portland to Yarmouth. We sail from Portland on June 15, and return to Portland from Yarmouth on June 22. We will have 7 nights total in Nova Scotia. Plan to go to Annapolis Valley/Fundy Shore & Cape Breton Island, & will stop in Halifax for one night before returning to Yarmouth. Our ferry arrives in Yarmouth around 1:30pm. Where would be a good place to stay in Annapolis Valley that would be a logical half-way point (more or less) to Baddeck? WE would stay for 3 nights. Is Digby worth staying in? Is it worth it to drive the Digby Neck? (nice coastal scenery?) Or I was thinking of Wolfeville or Grand Pre. Seems like a good half-way point.

Then we would spend 3 nights in Baddeck (seems like a good central location on Cape Breton) & then one night in Halifax.

Another question: There are 4 of us; my husband, myself & 2 daughters in their 20's. WE prefer B&B's but many of the rooms seem to be for only 2 people. WE prefer not to rent 2 rooms each night. Can someone recommend B&B's or Inns or nice small hotels with rooms for 4?
Thank you so much!

Your itinerary sounds great.

It is always difficult to find reasonable B&B's for 4 people but I have found that if you explain the situation and there are not a lot of existing reservations there may be a chance of aprice break.

While in Nova Scotia you MUST experience a "ceilidh" (pronounced kay-lee) which is an amzing experience. It is a traditional show put on the local musicians and dancers - the are is well renowned for it's talent. We went to one at the Normaway Inn, Margaree Valley, Cape Breton. We had dinner in the Inn (wonderful) and then out to the barn for the show. Spectacular.
We wished we had stayed at the inn but didn't know about it until we ate there. It looked like a quaint and cozy place to stay. There was fishing nearby because alot of guests had poles. I looked up the website for you which is www.thenormawayinn.com
If you happen to be driving up the east coast of Cape Breton, and you pass Neil's Harbour, go in to the Fish and chips place at the lighthouse for the best you've ever had.

My Nova Scotia highlight is the Fortress of Louisburg.
It is an outstanding fort and worth at least a half day
visit.

Arriving in Yarmouth, you have two choices for your route to Halifax. Yarmouth, Shelburne, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Halifax would take a full day. Take the backroads and enjoy the scenery. You can always stop at Peggy's Cove before heading into the city. Depending on what time you arrive - you may not have a lot of time to meander. (Straight drive on highway about 3.5 hours to Halifax)

I would recommend one day/night in Halifax. Lots to see and do, especially with daughters in 20's.

You are about a 4 hour drive to Baddeck from Halifax. Be prepared for roadwork which may add some time. Baddeck is a great central point. From here you can do the trail in one day - mind you doesn't give you a lot of time for hiking. Telegraph House used to have a house they rented (McNeil House I think). The price was reasonable and it had 3 bedrooms 1.5 bathrooms. Located in the heart of the Village.

Depending on weather, you should do the Fortress of Lousibourg. If foggy, it takes away from the breathtaking site. Make sure you bring warm clothing - it can be chilly on the point.

On your way back to Yarmouth, I would travel through the Annapolis Valley. Wolfville is charming. Annapolis Royal is worth checking out, Bear River, etc. Depending on where you are departing from in Cape Breton, it can be a 5 hour drive to Wolfville.

Remember, June is still early for tourism in the Province. Although B&B's will be open, some of the attractions may still not be operating at full capacity.

If you don't have a copy of the Doer's and Dreamer's guide from the Province of NS, I recommend you send for one.

Also, Pictou is a charming town to visit - halfway between Halifax and the Canso causeway. Check out Carver's Coffee shop and watch a class on wood carving. Several lovely restaurants! Lots of beautiful B&B's here!!!!

Or stop in New Glagow for a bite of lunch - Cafe Italia is always popular, The Dock (Irish charm) or Fibbers located in a historic building.

Thanks to everyone who posted. Ildiko, thank you for the tip about the Normaway Inn. WE would definitely like to see a Ceildih and will keep that one in mind. I will print out the posts and bring it with me. Thank you to everyone else for tips on sightseeing & restaurants.

I have made reservations at the Tattingstone Inn in Wolfeville for our first 3 mights, then 3 nights in Baddeck

Hi, I didn't finish my last post...sorry about that. We have 3 nights reservations in Wolfeville at the Tattingstone Inn and 3 nights in Baddeck at the Lynwood Inn and one night in Halifax at the GArden Inn. At Tattingstone & Lynwood, we have one room that sleeps 4 with private bath. At the Garden Inn, we have 2 rooms at $109 per room. Has anyone stayed at any of these places?

Will definitely go to a Ceilidh, Annapolis Royal & Fortress Louisbourg.

Thanks for all your tips.

I think the Garden Inn is close to the downtown core, and mostly used by people staying at the hospital. I have not stayed in the rooms, but haven't heard anything bad about it either.

The Lynwood has a great restaurant. Check out the Yellow Cello (or something like that in Baddeck). They usually have live music on the weekends and great pizza. If you want to have a drink without a meal, check out the yacht club. Non-members are welcomed and a great deck. Make sure you do the Alexander Graham Bell museum.

Tanya,
Thank you for your helpful suggestions! I think someone else also mentioned the Yellow Cello, so will definitely check that out.

Hope you enjoy Wolfville--Grand Pre, The Ridge, the Look-Off, Blomidon. Have been looking at Tattingstone for July trip to NS but not confirmed place to stay yet and of course the tides. Check to see if any programs offered at Acadia.

Hi Kwoo

We stayed at the Lynwood Inn last year , twice actually since we stayed for 1 night in one of the "new" rooms before going around the Cabot trail and then returned and stayed in one if the main Inn rooms (there are 3....er...I think we were in room 1? the one at the front on the right, anyway). We had a really nice stay, and I was 7 months pregnant so comfort was important

In June it may not be as much of an issue to you, but in the main lodge rooms the air conditioning is an in-window unit that is quite noisy (we ended up using the great breeze through the windows instead - and the room is beautiful). In the new rooms everything is clean, new, AC included and there are nice balconies if you get a room with a view - you are probably in these if the room sleeps 4. We paid the extra for the view, and I think it was worth it.

Yes the restaurant is good at the Inn as is the Yellow Cello (but book or go early since it does fill up!). Also, if you want a lighter breakfast there is a coffee shop/bakery within short walking distance where you can get a bowl of fruit or a yoghurt and a freshly baked fruit scone (huge!) and coffee for about 7 dollars. It also does snacks you can take along with you if you are traveling. To find it walk out the front door of the Inn, cross the street and turn left. The coffee shop is about 2 blocks as I recall and has a patio area with nice window boxes (sorry I cant remember the name offhand, but it is easy to find - just look for the steady stream of people going in and out!).
