Quebic City or Montreal
I would love to go the province of Quebec next summer. I have heard great things about both of these cities. I speak French so I would love to go wherever I can speak/read/be immersed in it the most and see beautiful architecture. Do you think I have enough time to do both in a week?if not, which city do you prefer? I also love history. Thanks!

The two cities are a few hours apart by highway and both well worth the visit...Montreal is a bit more cosmopolitan with a well preserved old section and Quebec City has a European flavor with a taste of France ... A week is plenty of time

Yes, you have time to visit both with a week. Both are a pleasure to visit for architecture- and history-lovers. Both offer plenty of opportunities for French language immersion, although Montreal has a much larger English-speaking population, especially noticeable downtown, in trendy neighborhoods and as one moves west on Montreal island. Although Montreal has more areas to explore, given your desire for immersion, I'm going to recommend for you a bit longer visit in Quebec City than I do to most casual travelers. 4 days Quebec City, 3 days Montreal. Note if you've not been exposed to Quebec French, that it can be challenging to understand for those who only familiar with the European varieties, especially when speaking to mumbling youth and certain members of the working class. Have fun! Daniel

You can certainly visit both cities in a week. Montreal is much larger, with many cultures - French, Italian, African, Jewish, Portuguese, etc. Montreal is famous for it's good restaurants, beautiful parks, shopping, interesting neighborhoods, and extensive bicycling trails.
Quebec City is considerably smaller, with a strong French influence. It is perhaps the most picturesque city in North America, much of it is like an old city in France. 3-4 nights in either city would be good.

I agree with DW, 4 nights in Quebec City and 3 in Montreal. From Quebec City do a day trip out to Montmerency Falls. Great hike and views.
While you are in Quebec make sure you stay within the walls. You can walk around to all the areas you want to see. There is a huge variety of small hotels, bed and breakfasts and large hotels to choose from. We have stayed within the walls on 6 different trips to Quebec. On last trip hubby went for hot air balloon ride over the area. Best anniversary present I ever gave him. Lots of history to investigate.
We have also had several trips to Montreal. Hike up the mountain. There are a million, OK at least a 100, great delis where you can get great sandwiches and desserts to create a little picnic. Some really cool old cathedrals. I just don't like Montreal as well because of crowds and cosmopolitan feel, those would be things to recommend it to others.

thank you so much everyone. All very helpful. If we end up going for a long weekend I think we will just go to Quebec City after all of the feedback here. It sounds wonderful. The hot air balloon ride sounds awesome too. I will make sure to stay within the walls. If we have a whole week I will do both cities I think.

For a long weekend I think Quebec City is a good choice. The Hilton is a 5-10 minute pleasant walk to the old city. Ask for a room with a view of the St.Laurence and chateau Frontenac. Once you reach the wall you will see Aux Anciens Canadiens on the right. Quebec city's oldest restaurant. Great 3 course luncheon prix fix (approx. $20.) includes a glass of wine.

I am on the train right now heading to Montreal from Quebec. City. Quebec city is lovely and does feel like a mini european city. You do not have to know French. Everyone speaks English but you will definitely be able to use your French! We stayed at the chateau Frontenac which is a beautiful castle like hotel.
