Quebec City in January

I am taking my son on a trip to celebrate his college graduation. We have decided on Quebec City. The most optimal time for both of our schedules is during his winter break. I wanted to avoid the prices and crowds of the Christmas and New Year holiday so we are left with the beginning of January. We are flexible on the dates, and I'm unsure of how long to stay and during which part of the week should I schedule. I don't want to plan and have everything closed during one of the days we are there. Also, any other advice about Quebec City would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!

Quebec is probably one of Canada's most interesting city simply because it's a fusion of Europe and North America. As you will be traveling with your son, I recommend that you look into the food tours offered around the city. It's a great way to kickstart your adventure in Canada, and an interactive way to get to know the city as well as its food reflects so much about its history and culture. From wine tasting to maple syrup tasting, you're sure to have a great time with your son!

Hope this helps. Have fun in Canada!

I didn't think of a food tour but that would be perfect for both of us! This does help! Thank you for the advice!

Would you consider going just prior to New Year's? It looks like many of the activities and events only go to Jan. 3rd or 4th. Also, it would be helpful if you provided more information about how you like to vacation. Are you history buffs (museums & tours)? Do you cross country ski or ice skate? Would you like to go to tea at the Frontenac? Will you have a car? If so, you could go dogsledding or have a drink at the Ice Hotel (45 mins. away).

We are flying on the Sunday the 3rd and leaving on Thursday the 7th. We won't have a car and are staying at the Frontenac. We are very laid back tourists. We're not getting up at the crack of dawn and jamming in as much as possible each day.

I prefer museums and churches, I love history and my son loves it more. Im interested in the way people lives so historic homes/palaces etc I find very interesting. He is more intelectual about his history.

Neither of us want to participate in winter sports or activities that are outside for an extended period of time.

The two things that are must see on my list so far are the shrine of St Anne and the notre dame de quebec.

The one thing that I'm a little concerned about is that neither of us speak any French. I know maybe two words. I had a friend try to teach me but I cannot pronounce it for the life of me and feel awkward butchering it. Is this going to be an issue?

Everyone speaks English.
Learn some pleasantries in French. You will be fine. I have stayed at the Fronternac and it is very nice.
They have a bus tour into the country that takes you to St. Annes and a few other places.
Notre Dame is a beautiful church in walking distance from the Fronternac.
Sign up for the Fairmont club and get free wifi in your room. I also did the gold level and got upgraded to a suite for my birthday. You can let them know this is a special trip for you and your son. Who knows you are going when it should be less busy.

There are many little pubs in town. Find out if there will be live music. Look on the internet for anything happening in the city. It should be quite cold! Bring warm clothes!!

Try dinner at Le Continental. You can walk from the Fronternac. It has some items cooked tableside. Ceasar salad, duck a laorange, cherries jubilee. It is expensive, but a very nice dinner and something different.

I went with my husband for my 50th bday and then took my daughter last June for her college graduation. You will have a great time!

Oh and Canada loves hockey. I doubt they have the quebec team up and running yet this year, but going to watch hockey in a pub might be fun.

We also liked Bello which is italian and right up the street from the Fronternac as well for decent and reasonably priced italian food.

One more thing if you are considering doing Montreal and QC, then definitely try to get tickets to see a hockey game. We flew into QC and home from Montreal taking the train inbetween. It is about a 3 hour train ride. I read one of your other posts mentioning driving and doing both cities. I would not fly into just montreal and then take the train back and forth. I did that the first time and it is so much better not to waste two days on the train. Fly into one and out of the other.
