we will be travelling from Australia May /08. Arriving in Vancouver, is it possible to travel to Banff, Jasper, Whitehorse, Fairbanks, Anchorage by public transport? Also is it possible to go on local ferries from Anchorage back to Vancouver, what will the weather be like around that time? Thanks anyone!

How long are you staying in North America? You have quite an ambitous itinerary wanting to see all those spots. First off, check out an atlas so that you realize how far the distance is between these cities. I would suggest either sticking to Vancouver/Jasper/Banff OR doing the Alaska route. I know that there is public transportation (either train or bus) for the Vancouver/Banff/Jasper route. I think the only way to get from Vancouver to Alaska without driving your own vehicle would be via plane. Not sure if there are trains or buses that travel that route. There is no ferry from Anchorage to Vancouver - cruise ships yes, but not ferries. Weather in May could be cold and snowy, or hot and sunny.
