We are planning a week-long trip to PEI this summer with our 3 grown children. A close-by beach for swimming, trails for biking & hiking, and relative quiet, beautiful location are priorities, but we want to be close enough to get to more activities in a reasonable time (30-60 mins). We are looking at St. Peter's (Dune Spirit Cottages) or Stanhope (Butler's cottages). Any advice as to which location would be best as a base for us? Has anyone stayed at either place? We are thinking of day trips to different parts of the island too, so want to be able to do that as well - which means a central-enough location.
Thank you!
Prince Edward Island - St. Peter's or Stanhope?

i am a nephew. I have been to Stanhope Butler' cottages, they were FABULOUS! my aunt says she liked it too, visiting. You may have trouble booking ahead, as my family have tried to book and have had some difficulty in doing so already for next summer. My aunt tells me she prefers St. Peter's, but I must disagree, as the national park beauty of Stanhope far exceeds that of "St. Peter's". Richard's seafood is close, and delicious, and fishing is possible.
Actually he is right, the cottage they rented was lovely, but both areas are and both are really not that distant from each other and surrounding destinations.
I have to vote for St Peters. I moved to PEI 6 years ago, and after looking around many places, I chose to settle in St Peters. The Stanhope/Cavendish area is the centre for PEI tourism, and as a result are a bustle of activity in the summer. St Peters has a devloping tourism industry, but it is much more quiet and laid back. It also has the Confederation Trail running along the water for biking and easy hiking (one of the few spots where the trail actually goes along the water). It is only 30 mins from Charlottetown, and has lots of great beaches. There are a couple of beaches nearby that are almost empty in summer, as opposed to the busy beaches in Stanhope/Cavendish. And you can't beat the views out over the bay, particularly at sunset.
