Police Blue Light Special in Jasper

We received a ticket by a policeman who said he was giving us a "bllue light special" near Jasper. As we exchanged money and bought money orders, we found others with the same experience paying their blue light special. How about it out there--is Jasper one of those famous traps?

Their loss. We planned to stay in Jasper and tour the area, but decided to spend our $$$ in another town while we toured.

Lynne - it's the same person! Seems as though they planned to stay in Banff, and decided to spend their money elsewhere because of their ticket there. Then, they got caught in Jasper, and decided to pass by that town because of their ticket there. If her story is true, I'd be curious to hear where she DID spend her money (besides on speeding tickets!)!!

Someone should inform her that it's not a "trap" or money-making scheme - the lower speed limits in the National Park are there for a reason, and are strictly enforced. Perhaps she should have taken the first ticket as a hint to slow down & enjoy the scenery!

Tim

Hi Tim!! I agree with you completely!

Interesting, Barbara posted one message on the 17th, I replied to it on the 18th, then after my reply she posted under another title and place? Strange....Did she get 2 tickets? Maybe the 1st one should have been a hint to slow down...

I realized it was the same person after I replied to the 2nd message. I notice that there was no reply to my question about whether or not she was speeding...I guess she didn't like my reply to the 1st one so tried posting it again?

Slow down and enjoy life! Especially in beautiful places like the Canadian Rockies.

When I wrote the e-mail saying Banff, it was an error so I took it off. I then added the correct city--Jasper.

We were passing a large truck and camper on a straight so we would not have to go so slowly.

Had we not met other couples exchanging money and buying money orders we would not have been suspicious.

I stand by my statement--Jasper is a blue light special trap for tourist.

I think her silence tells us that she was speeding but would have been inconvenienced (oh, horrors) if she hadn't, so is ticked off to have the law enforced.
Maybe the reason the cops give tickets to tourists is that other tourists share her attitude.

All I can say is that having been passed on roads in Canada by crazy Canadians going 15 to 20K over the speed limit, that if someone gets a speeding ticket in Canada, one of two conditions must be true: (1) the vehicle was going like the devil, (2) the driver was in the wrong place at the right time.

We have vacationed in Canada, including Jasper, many times and have never been stopped. We usually stay at a reasonable level, 5 to 10 K over the limit depending on how many vehicles are passing us.

I have no idea what a blue light special is. It sounds like they were shopping at K Mart or Kroger.

I had a rather interesting and somewhat uncomfortable experience 3 years ago. We were driving from Lake Louise - Golden - Revelstoke - Vernon. We were driving at the speed limit or slightly above it. Cars were constantly tailgating us and passing on curves and hills where visibility was at a minimum. These are not divided freeways so bad luck and Blam, you are history. These cars had to be traveling at least 20 mph above the speed limit. We see that in California sometimes but almost always by young drivers. These folks were usually families, and almost without exception, from Alberta.

I would suspect you were speeding,if you travel 2 kph under any posted speed limit anywheres you may travel. You will not have to worry about blue light specials or any color specials.

Barbara, they do it all the time! The small town RCMP around the major roads enforce the speed limits with gusto. These roads provide alot of the towns' revenue, and they try to get as much as they can.

When travelling these roads don't just think the traps may be there, expect them to be there. They will be!

Sorry to hear it left a bad taste in your mouth, I've posted a warning to travellers, so perhaps others won't find themselves in this situation. The standard speed on the TransCanada for instance is 120-130 km/hr, and the RCMP picks them off like fish in a barrel.
