Hi folks,
Here is our proposed itinerary for a 5-night visit to Banff & Yoho in mid-July 2011. This is going to be our last vacation for awhile, so we would like to make it very special. We'd love any feedback.
In particular, we're wondering whether we should change our lodging on Thursday and Friday nights in Banff to the Baker Creek Chalet in Lake Louise. We'd prefer to stay in the intimate, glowingly reviewed Buffaloberry B&B but wonder whether Lake Louise would make a better base for our explorations on those days. Any advice would be appreciated!

A few specific questions:
If we do decide to stay at Baker Creek instead of in Banff, will we miss out by not seeing Banff altogether? Is the Banff gondola a must-do? (Or will we be just as happy doing the Lake Louise gondola)?
Is the town of Banff a must-see destination, or will it be so crowded in mid-July that it would be okay to miss?
One option I'm considering is keeping our B&B reservation in Banff on Thursday night but changing the reservation on Friday night to Baker Creek. What do you folks think?
Thanks for your time!

Here are my suggestions:
If you want to stay in Banff, I would do it on Wednesday and just spend the day seeing things/hiking around Banff so that you are not backtracking. We usually stay in Lake Louise but will drive into Banff for dinner one night or go into town if it rains. It's about a 30 minute drive.
Thurs.
Drive to Lake Louise/Moraine Lake
Stay at Moraine Lake Lodge--Moraine and Lake Louise are right next to each other. Stay there or any place in Lake Louise. Lake Louise is also the gateway to the Icefields Parkway. You don't want to drive back to Banff on Thurs. night and then drive back up the next morning.
Friday
Drive the Icefields Parkway--spend the night at Moraine Lake Lodge or in Lake Louise. We actually liked Paradise Lodge even better than Baker Creek--even though Baker Creek is very nice. Lake Louise is also closer to the bus pick up for Lake O'Hara
Saturday and Sunday at Emerald Lake Lodge--we loved Emerald Lake Lodge.
We have only done the gondolas when we have skiied the area so someone else will have to comment on those. We love the hike to the Lake Agnes Teahouse in Lake Louise--or as another option, the Plain of Six Glaciers. They both start at the same trailhead.
I suggest you allow for time to just sit at the top of the Rock Pile overlooking Moraine Lake.
We were there last summer and I spent two early mornings just sitting there watching the sun come up behind me and light up the lake. Then there's the early evenings for a different view at the same place. This is the back of the old Canadian 20 dollar bill. Make Lake Louise look ordinary. That Turquoise water!!!
I see you have Peyto lake marked in. While the hike is pretty short, it's a bit uphill in the highest elevation in Banff. Not too high but enough that you may feel it. Also has that amazing turquoise water.
Also, just across the highway from Banff Townsite. I spent the very early mornings and late evenings slowly driving up and down Mt Norquay. I was rewarded with some closeup photos of a black bear one morning and a mother black bear and three cubs one evening.
Also in the vicinity. Lake Minnewanka. I drove the scenic road twice and both times saw a group of Big Horn on the side of the road.
At the start of the Minnewanka Scenic Drive I noticed a turnoff with few markings. I decide to take it. Amazing views of the mountains with lakes in the foreground. I think the turnoff is called Cascade Pond. It's just after starting the Lake Winnewanka Scenic Drive. Turn is to the right.
Not everything has to be far or long.
Oops. I didn't realize this is a year old.
How did the trip go?
