Places to stay in N.S./Things to do with small children

We're planning a trip this July to the maritimes. We're staying in Bar Harbor one night, taking the Cat ferry to Yarmouth. We're going to stay 2 nights in Nova Scotia, to see the Bay of Fundy. We'd like to stay in Wolfville, because we figure it's about halfway around the bay, and should be a pretty good spot to travel to and from. Any suggestions for a place to stay? We have a 1 yr old and a 3 yr old, so a small B&B is out. Does anyone know about the Old Orchard Inn? We tried the Tattingstone Inn but it's already booked up. What about the Blomindon Inn? I don't want a very small room.

Also, where can we walk down into the bay at low tide? We see lots of photographs of people doing that, but no real guide as to where you can go to do that.

On PEI we're staying at Stanhope-By-the-Sea motel. Any comments? It looks pretty nice. I used to vacation on PEI as a child (I have an aunt who still lives there), so I have a pretty good idea what we'll do there (Anne's house, Woodleigh, driving the coast). Does anyone have recommendations for bike rentals for the Confederation Trail? We need bikes with child seats.

Finally, we're going to make our way back to CT via New Brunswick. We'll probably stay one night at a hotel hopefully near the border and near the Bay of Fundy. Any suggestions there?

Thanks for any help at all.

Sally

Wolfville's a good choice....nice upscale college town w/ a few good dining options and an attractive downtown. Old Orchard isn't really an Inn it's more of a Hotel/Motel kinda like a Holiday Inn....wouldn't be my choice. Blomindan is good. There's also one called Victoria's or Victoria B&B that's very good. We had a "coachhouse" room that was huge. There are also "cottages" in town that look nice but I can't remember the name.
For New Brunswick I'd stay in either St Andrews or St George....both just a few minutes from the Maine border. Both are nice towns. St Andrews is upscale and has a bunch of great places to stay.
Cheers, Rob

Thanks Rob. I actually was looking into the Victoria, and they have the Coachman's room available. A little pricey, but that's only relative to other rooms in N.S. At $126 US it would be a bargain in, say, Bar Harbor.

So you really liked the Victoria? I'd love to hear more about it.

Hi Sally,

There's a provincial park at Cape Blomidon where you'll be able to walk out on the sand at low tide. I'm sure you've heard all about how quickly the tide comes in around there. Just time it properly and you'll be fine. As to bicycles on PEI, I know that McQueens on Queen St. does a lot of renting, but have no other info. You would also be able to walk the beach at low tide on the south side of PEI. On the north side (Cavendish area) the tide doesn't go out very far. Enjoy!

Sally....I don't have a lot to say about Victoria's. The room was massive with a living room area and a private entrance.....it felt like home. The main inn building was "period" decor while the coach house was more modern...both pleasant. We have a dining fave in Wolfville: Acton's. Really nice bistro style, fine dining. They have a terrific brunch on the weekends. Feel free to drop me a line directly if you have specific questions on the area...I used to live nearby in Halifax and spent a lot of time in Wolfville and surrounding area.

Thanks again Rob. We went ahead and booked the Coachman's room at the Victoria. I think we'll like it alot. My only concern is that I'll have a one yr old and a three year old with me, and kids and antiques don't always go well together. But if I see anything I think they are likely to break, I'll just ask to have it removed while we're there.

This forum is great!

Sally

En route from Yarmouth you might like to stop at the Upper Clemments theme park (they have a web site). It is a lovely park with lots of rides and fun for kids. Beautifully landscaped and overlooking the water. There is a wildlife park across the street - lots to do for the little kids as well as the older kids. I'm sure the place you reserved is beautiful but the Old Orchard Inn has a lot to offer familes so don't count it out. Digby has become a pretty little town - it would be a good place to stop for a bite to eat. They are famous for their scallops. Have a great trip!

A belated thank-you to everyone who replied to my questions. We stayed at the Victoria Inn in Wolfville and LOVED it. The nicest inn I've ever stayed at. The rooms were big, cozy, comfortable. Not to far from Blomidon, which was incredible too. WOnderful breakfast. Then we stayed at Stanhope by the Sea on PEI. The lcoation was great, right near the National Park beach. But they were having a minor beetle problem when we were there, and it was a little icky swatting beetles off my son's head as he tried to fall asleep. Not sure if I'd go back there. Then we stayed at the Pansy Patch in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. I wish I could live there. So picturesque. Big comfortable room there too. Breakfast was delicious.

We're going to Halifax in early May, so I'd love some recommendations for Inns or B&Bs there.

Sally
