passport needed from usa to canada?
Just read that a passport will be required for entry into Canada from the USA starting August 1.
Is this correct?
We have ours however I'm thinking our youngest will need a new one; is it still true that kids under 18 need them replaced every 4 years vs. adults at 10 years?

Finally found (and searched) the official website and can't find a definitive answer.
In other words, does an 18 y/o (now considered an adult per their site) need a new passport if their previous passport was issued 4 years earlier at age 14?

However you may need one to get back into the states. We were in the Detroit area two weeks ago and wanted to revisit Windsor. We were told by the hotel staff who called to be sure that a passport AND another picture id was needed to return to the US.

U.S. citizens do not need a passport to get back into the U.S. from Canada. They need a picture ID and birth certificate or similar form of id.
From the State Dep't website:
"Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license."

It's true that a passport is not yet a requirement, but if you want to avoid hassles, a passport is your best bet. If you are flying in, this is ESPECIALLY true.

FYI, if you are the only parent going into Canada with your child(ren), you will need to get a letter signed and notarized by your spouse (or ex-spouse) authorizing you to take your child into another country. This is to prevent parental kidnappings.
